New bargain baby

New bargain baby

bought this, in its pot for £1.99 today, quite like the unusual colour, some petals have curled up and gone black at the edges though.

now that is a great compliment ~ thanks stevie

That's THE colour to have these in!

Mine has a new spike just poking through.

7 Dec, 2011

a meanie photo would have just a single bloom or space between the flowers.

they were going to throw it away but the leaves look healthy ~ i think it will survive.

"a meanie photo would have just a single bloom or space between the flowers."

You've noticed! It does my head in if I can't get a clean close-up!

It'll survive as long as the roots are good. Stand it on some pebbles in a mushroom punnet with water in up to just below the top of the pebbles.
Ditch the ceramic pot though........

i know the feeling ~ i really liked the compliment from stevie, made my day, but i knew you would do a better one.

i thought the ceramic pot would have to go ~ shame really.

how high up should the pebbles come in relation to the top of the soil?

watching a program on a community bakery ~ i would love to learn to make bread properly

Half fill the punnet with pebbles and stand the pot on top of the pebbles. Keep the water out of contact with the pot. This raises the humidity nicely.
How cool was the store? The blackening on the petals indicates pretty cool - or was it by the door? Might be good if your room wasn't to warm.......

7 Dec, 2011

it would have been near the door i think, around the fruit and veg area which is fairly cool,

dont put it in the kitchen at the moment then??

7 Dec, 2011

Personally, the coolest room that you have. Bathroom is generally cool here (towels on the radiator). The warmth comes with loads of humidity.
If it gets a sudden rise in constant temps it may drop its blooms.

7 Dec, 2011

bathroom will be fine, quite cool but better than spare bedroom cos it might get forgotten there.

not a big room but can always take orchid out if its likely to get very warm.

7 Dec, 2011

if this plant survives it will be a miracle...... the roots have been super-soaked ~ looks like sphagnum moss.

7 Dec, 2011

That was the problem with the ones I bought Sticki..Fantastic Photo and a beautiful colour flower.

7 Dec, 2011

thanks pimpernel ~ did yours survive?

7 Dec, 2011

I hope Meanie aint reading this...They were so water logged I had to blot and gently squeeze the roots on kitchen towel. They are still alive though.

7 Dec, 2011

do you think i should try that too?

7 Dec, 2011

Don't ask me for advice on Orchids...These are my first. I would not like to lose those ones Sticki, you'd best check. Mine were smelling stagnant though, so I thought it best.

7 Dec, 2011

i better go and sniff mine!!!

meanie will read this eventually i expect, he will know what to do.

7 Dec, 2011

Sphag moss is a perfectly good medium..............

Pop it out of the (soft?) pot and drill about 20 6mm holes in the pot, then put it back in. Let it almost dry out, run the tap with lukewarm water and flush it through for 10mins. Let it dry out and repeat 3 or 4 times.

This is why cache pots are evil!

7 Dec, 2011

Thank you meanie, it has one central hole at the moment, maybe appx 7mm wide?
The pot is clear and really quite soft plastic

7 Dec, 2011

That's it. As I say, pop it out and drill twenty 6mm holes around the side of the pot - it'll breath better.

7 Dec, 2011

that's a real beauty Sticki, love the colour...

8 Dec, 2011
