Shrew that's really a Vole!

Sat down beside it, gave it a hazelnut, which it didn't want then tried to run up my trouser leg!

So cute!

Not a shrew Lulu, baby field or woodmouse. I think woodmice have larger eyes & ears though & the tail is too long for a vole.
Hmm!! Now I'v said that Im leaning towards vole - - - isnt nature wonderful !! & confusing ;-))

it is lovely, i think its a vole, shrews have very long noses ~ i see them quite often ~ courtesy of my cat!! its that rounded nose that makes me think vole??

you wont want to know the details of what she eats and what she leaves but she appears to be very fussy.

It froze in fright I think, before it tried to hide up my trouser leg!

24 Aug, 2011

it is a great picture ~ well done you! is that with your phone again?

24 Aug, 2011

Certainly was! Wouldn't take half the pics I do without it!
Dad was so impressed with my phone camera he's gone and bought the same phone too!!

24 Aug, 2011

i would love one ~ just need the monthly payment to be cheaper!!

24 Aug, 2011

30 quid a month and I don't use a landline!
Dad worried about the monthly payment too, but he gave in in the end!!

Maybe you will become a famous mosaic artist and can afford one easy!!

25 Aug, 2011

that might be a dream too!!
more likely to get the phone than to become famous for anything ~ especially as an artist

what i really wanted in life was an olympic gold!!!!!

but they dont do my event ~ talking on GoY seems to have been missed off the list of events.

25 Aug, 2011

I think we'd all be in the running for a gold for GoY chat!!!

26 Aug, 2011

You are both famous to me...and who needs fame anyway when you can get that close to a tiny little creature like this.....magic!

26 Aug, 2011

you are kind karen ~ it wasnt the fame i wanted, i just wanted to be good at something and i would love to jump a long way.

we could do the relay lulu???

26 Aug, 2011

Wish you had been up at 4am this morning...........no-one was on GoY or facebook!!

26 Aug, 2011

26 Aug, 2011

Lol!!! Maybe next time round!

26 Aug, 2011

will try.

26 Aug, 2011

Yes, I would have to agree that jumping a long way is quite a lot of fun! :)) Myself, either a dancer or a Tennis player....just think how fit you would be..but I think if I had to choose it would be a dancer...just seems to me to be the best job in the entire world....music and the joy of moving to it!

26 Aug, 2011

if i tried to dance i would be far worse than john sergeant. it would be a nightmare.

did you used to jump karen?

26 Aug, 2011

I long-jumped at school Sticki but Oliveoil will confirm that I refused to jump for the county...I'm just not competitive enough for sports!

26 Aug, 2011

i did the same but i am competitive!!! easy to be competitive in athletics and hockey but when i had to play in a raquetball tournament i couldnt be!!

26 Aug, 2011

I was a gymnast, spent more time doing cartwheels and walking on my hands, probably why my shoulders are knackered!!

27 Aug, 2011

oh amazing ~ love watching the gymnasts.

This is a lovely little bank vole. You can tell by their slightly rounded noses. We used to get them in our stone walls when we lived down the road, ALso got field mice with gingery coat and white chest area visiting. Wood mice as well that are slightly smaller and have very large round ears and small body.

Thank you Lindak, a bank vole. There must be loads of them about as the dogs are always rummaging in the grass and hedgerows.

You must have owls visiting then as well. We used to get the little owl, barn owl and tawny owl visiting at night.

1 Sep, 2011

We do have owls but haven't seen them in a while. Once winter nights draw in will see them on the railings.

1 Sep, 2011

I think that the owls had a tough winter to get through last year and they have declined in numbers. I haven't seen as many little birds like blue tits and wrens either. I tried to feed the birds with mealworms, that weren't cheap.....and nuts and seeds and make sure that they had water that they could get to in the icy period. When you think about it they only have a small bodymass to get through the intense cold. Remarkable really. We do our best for them don't we.

It's an expensive outlay feeding the wee darlings. There is lots of food for them at the moment but I know I will give in a feed them over the winter!
