The Generous Gardener

I like the name of this rose, I think it would make a lovely present for a lot of people on GoY!!
It is almost a rambling rose ~ is that also appropriate?

26 Jul, 2011

I tried his web site to see if he did the rose called Lucy, but could not find it,

26 Jul, 2011

I have the book from him, I will have a look,

sorry there only seems to be one called 'Lucetta'

26 Jul, 2011

thanks, I will take a look at his website see what colour it is,

26 Jul, 2011

it says large, soft, blush-pink flowers, fragrant
but there isnt a picture; its an english musk hybrid

26 Jul, 2011

I look at it, but did not like it very much, sorry

26 Jul, 2011

hi Sticki...I saw this today in the David Austin catologue... I like it...

26 Jul, 2011

26 Jul, 2011

26 Jul, 2011

im trying to get it to go round a telegraph pole that we have in our garden???

26 Jul, 2011

I cut mine really hard back last winter and it is now about 8 feet high by about six feet wide!

26 Jul, 2011

You can send for the David Austin Handbook of Roses free, it's full of the most voluptuous pics...I now want loads! I'm going to visit the rose gardens soon as I want to see them in flower in the DA rose gardens:-))

28 Jul, 2011

I have the book Ba ~ i think they keep on sending them once you are on the mailing list but they are nice books to look through. are you going to david austin rose gardens Ba?

i shall try to remember that its good to cut it down ~ thanks karen.

28 Jul, 2011

I'm going to remove mine Sticki. It's about 7' tall just now, all the flowers are at the very top and it just looks a mess. Sad, as it's a nice rose, but I think it needs more space than I can offer.

28 Jul, 2011

not sure what this one will do ~ only been in a year!?

28 Jul, 2011

That's far to vigorous for me...
I got my catologue a couple of days ago...fantastic choice...

28 Jul, 2011

Yes Sticki, it involves two buses 1 train and a taxi from Cosford, but I'm going to get there! I'd love to see them all , have to treat myself to a cake in tea rooms too:-))

29 Jul, 2011

Karen, have you tried contacting David Austins? they may have advice for you, seems such a shame to disturb your lovely garden:-(

29 Jul, 2011

i didnt go in the tea room ~ would like to tho!
thats a bit of a treck for you Ba. its a bit out of the way for main roads isnt it.
maybe i shall go again next year ~ we could all meet up??

29 Jul, 2011

I'd enjoy that sticki:-) It is a trek, hoping to go next week, fingers crossed. Not decided which day yet. I've got my eye on a number of roses:-)

29 Jul, 2011

hope the sun shines, please take your camera ~ you could do a 'rekky'?? for us all!!??

29 Jul, 2011

I certainly will, they won't know what's hit 'em next year...a ravenous GOY army:-)

29 Jul, 2011

29 Jul, 2011

You sending triffids Mark?

29 Jul, 2011

I re-read it a few years ago...it was still a good read:-)

30 Jul, 2011

I had to read it for school - but my dad flicked through the book to see what we were reading, found a swear word and wrote a letter of complaint to the school!!

30 Jul, 2011

Bet that embarrassed you...I would have died:-0

31 Jul, 2011

I don;t know if this will help you but with climbing roses the new shoots that grow up should be spread out sideways and then you should have flowers along the stems. Cut any back that you don't want That's what I do. Cut the old wood of every three years back. I cut back the flowering stems to about five inches too. Climbing roses are different to prune than ordinary ones but if you look on the internet it may help you.

31 Jul, 2011

thanks linda, i didnt realise you had to cut them back so far.

i dont think it did Ba ~ but i was a bit scared.

31 Jul, 2011

I'm useless at pruning and training, thanks for that Lindak:-) Have you read it yet Sticki?:-)

31 Jul, 2011

read day of the triffids?

31 Jul, 2011

Yes:-)

1 Aug, 2011

i have, yes, whether my dad liked it or not!! i thought it was a good story. seen the film too but preferred the book. actually i thought the world of my dad but he didnt approve of bad language!!! no tv till i was 14 and that was only because someone gave us an old broken tv ~ and my brother fixed it!!!

1 Aug, 2011

When my children were young, I used to ration them to one hour a day of children's television. They didn't like it as their school mates could watch loads of later tele. I think it's a problem that children take in violence from birth via the tele:-(

1 Aug, 2011

i think you are right, they also dont sleep so well cos they watch till late at night ~ well, some of them, not all!

1 Aug, 2011

I find if I'm here late it's very hard to sleep after. So OH did me a favour moaning about it. Lord knows how I would sleep if playing violent games on here:-(

2 Aug, 2011

there is something in a computer screen that affects your eyes and or brain i think ~ the new kindle that you can read books from is a much darker screen so that doesnt hurt your eyes ~ i think???
my son told me he doesnt use his ipad late at night because of it keeping you awake.

2 Aug, 2011

Radiation? What is kindle? you know I'm a technophobe:-)

2 Aug, 2011

dont panic mr mannering ~ i dont think its radiation!

a kindle is a small devise made by amazon, its big enough to hold flat in your hand and it stores books ~ so you can read loads of books and take it on holiday etc.

2 Aug, 2011

Don't be silly Sticky lol:-))

2 Aug, 2011

;-)

2 Aug, 2011

Just a further comment about cutting the flowering shoots back to about five inches. It's the flowering shoots that have grown along the sidewards stems If your bush just has them at the tops cut them back to the second set of leaves below where the flowers are. Any new strong growth spread sideways and cut any growth out you don't want. Good luck......xx

6 Aug, 2011

thank you.

6 Aug, 2011

Was lolling reading throught that! its lovely ST! :)

18 Aug, 2011

the open flower doesnt last very long but it has a nice fragrance.

18 Aug, 2011

A lovely name..you are right Sticki. I wonder if we could get Lindak down this way to prune all our roses, Im pretty useless at it..wasnt one of my better skills!

24 Aug, 2011

Tell you what, get BA to arrange it..she's good at that sort of thing LOL!

24 Aug, 2011

BA ~ GoY's answer to Jim'll fix it!!!
must remember that ~ didnt know lindak was the rose expert.

24 Aug, 2011

Whoa...I think you've got the wrong end of the stick there Tet. I know how modest you are, but honestly...why hide your light under a bushel? Making others aware of your amazing organising abilities has become my raison d'etre:-) If only you were here now...I'm having my front made over (no personal remarks please) and long to have someone like you to organise things before I have a nervous breakdown:-(

25 Aug, 2011

can you post a photo BA??

25 Aug, 2011

DONT ask her that Sticki!!! She will post something fabulous and put mine in the shade...she's like that you know..sniff, sniff!
And stop creeping BA...I will NOT settle out of court

26 Aug, 2011

I will when it's done Sticki, unfortunately rain has stopped play:-( This is where I'm hoping to have some lovely DA english roses, still haven't made it there yet;-)

26 Aug, 2011

What you having done BA? Is it structural? Do take before and afters so we can have a gloat with you!

27 Aug, 2011

DA usually send out their roses around October/November? So you have plenty of time yet Ba!

27 Aug, 2011

But I want to see them NOW!!! lol. I need to see their shape, and if they're still flowering and gorgeous etc:-) I will put some pics on, maybe a small blog showing what caused the stress and how it is being put right:-)

27 Aug, 2011

Yes please Ba - would love to see. This generous gardener was a DA rose, we went to their site.

27 Aug, 2011

27 Aug, 2011

27 Aug, 2011

27 Aug, 2011

28 Aug, 2011
