Home made squirrel proof bird feeder

Home made squirrel proof bird feeder

This is my second attempt as the first one used a tub which was too small and the little blighters could climb down it. This one works. The tub is about 14 inches deep and 9 inches wide at the top widening to about a foot . I drilled a hole through the bottom and passed a wire through it from which to hang the peanut feeder .

Professional made versions start at about £20. This cost nothing as it was an old pot but pots like this can be bought cheaply for about £2. It may not be the picture of sartorial elegance but it works!

If you'd like to see a video of the main squirrel culprit it's here

Ohh! Very inventive!...and it keeps the food dry as well! Always a bonus! Good thinking!

Made me laugh, great idea, I can just imagine the squirrel, he is now sat in his tree plotting, his pen and paper handy with drawings on how to make it not so squirrel proof. lol. I bet he is scratching his head and chattering away to himself now. Brilliant job Anchorman.

Nutkins may yet find a way to the nutsis. They are devilishly clever. Another big crop of nuts forming on our Hazel tree, and our bird feeders come under attack later. They keep checking to see when the nuts are ready Like eating through the plastic to get at the sunflower hearts.

We bought a squirrel proof feeder so that our Robin could feed when he wanted to, I filled the centre with dried mealy worms and then watching from the kitchen saw a magpie fly up to the feeder, he tipped it and the worms fell to the ground, easy meal!!! Well you can imagine what I said and yes A.man, I had paid £19.99 for this feeder too!! Lol. I love yours you should patent it!

very clever of you! we don't have any squirrels in the garden, we did actually glimpse one last week for the first time in 20 years of living here, so maybe we will have some more. I know they are considered a nuisance, but we love them, also in summer we take the feeders in so there would be nothing for them to eat anyway!

My birds empty the peanut feeder every day, winter or summer.
