Front garden June 08

Front garden June 08

These Box hedges were all from 10 plants which I planted deeply and every few years I lifted them and split them. Eventually, I was able to make waves in the hedge. The Yew shapes near the door have grown over 26 years. When we came here we couldn't walk up the front path without brushing past them they were so big. To our neighbour's horror we stripped them back to their trunks and over the years we've shaped them.

I'm not usually keen on hedges made into different shapes but these look really great. : )

The plaque near the doorway says "Four Seasons" - the same as our profile icon.

I do like this idea. I suppose if time is on your side.

It didn't take as long as we thought it would to get the shapes - we now trim them once a year, properly, and another time just to take off the rogue bits. The main yew hedge near the fence replaced a privet hedge and rose border - not a good combination! The soil was parched so we made a trench and put humus at the bottom, together with Growmore, and planted little hedging yew. It grew surprisingly fast!

I just love your Box hedge, and the shape you have created, looks great.

Very clever.

I love your crazy paving - I'd like to replace a large square of pea shingle (which gets everywhere) in my own front garden with some crazy paving, so to see this photo is very inspiring. Good to see it, much prefer it to the block paving which seems to be fashionable these days. What a lovely front garden, congrats!
