Pansies 21 May

Pansies 21 May

Had terrible trouble with winter flowering pansies this year. They didn't like the cold and wet and developed pansy spot. I usually wait and plant them in the spring but thought I'd get ahead of myself by planting them last autumn. Big mistake! They only got going in May and I now have my summer tiered basket planted up to take this one's place - but it looks too good to move!

You certainly have to leave them in! I hope you didn't have plans for that planter - lol

Realised last year that I had to get another one so that I wasn't champing at the bit to plant up the next display. It has worked - the new one is waiting in the wings and bulking up nicely.

Stunning!

I've just pruned the pansies down completely - they are already sprouting again. I've put some tuberous begonias amongst them and, hopefully, the planters will spring to life again during July.

How novel to do it that way. It's the nicest display of pansies I've ever seen. A rainbow in your garden!

Having pruned back the winter flowering pansies I decided to put begonias and annuals in the same soil. This has given these containers some summer flowering interest and the pansies have started their second flush of blooms

WOW they are amazing!

The one that are in a big pot have black spots too - should I prune them now?

I wouldn't prune them now. Last year we used a fungicide especially for pansy spot. The plants develop the disease when they are stressed - too wet, too cold... Healthy pansies can resist the disease even when they are near those with it. If you prune the sick plants now they may find it even more stressful.

That's a fantastic way of displaying them! I absolutely love it! Here in the town where I live the council have planted several tier planters like yours & filled them with Violas, they look fantastic, too!

wow how do you make this let me know for the next summer than i can realize something like this too

This is just a three-tiered wire basket. Each basket fits onto the next one with a central pole. Though more expensive, it is worth getting this type of tiered basket because those that are fixed together are very difficult to move when planted up and the pole can snap as you're moving it.

Planting is done as with any basket - using moss or other liner and gradually building up layers of pansies.
