"Buddhas & Bagpipes" show garden, Gardening Scotland 2008
This garden, by garden design course students at the Scottish Agricultural College (Ayr campus), aimed to reflect the botanical, educational and social links between Scotland and the Himalayan region. Inspiration came from the Explorers' Garden in Pitlochry, Perthshire, and the Buddhist monastery of Sayme Ling, Eskdalemuir. All the plants, common in our gardens today, originated in the Himalayas, and were chosen to honour 4 Scottish plant hunters: Robert Fortune (1812-1880); Thomas Thomson (1817-1887); George Forrest (1873-1932); and George Sherriff (1898-1967).

I really like them, too, Lori. Very calm and peaceful. There was a huge bonsai display at the show by the Scottish Bonsai Society, with demonstrations on how to do it.

So did you stop to take in a demo...or were you boggled by seeing everything in one day? I get that way when I go to a show...want to see everything and miss absolutely nothing... turn into a whirlwind. hubby just rolls his eyes....whatever!...lol.

Yes, the wiring up of those little trees and shrubs was intriguing and, of course, they made it look so easy, too. I've been given bonsai twice in the past as pressies, but wasn't at all good at caring for them. I thought I'd be well organised, went to the website first and take note of my "must sees" and conccentrate on those. It didn't work, lol.

The thing with bonsai is ...it's almost anti gardening...you put it out in the weather and that's it...I think it's cheating to water them, isn't it?
What else?

Do you like oriental gardens? I especially like the use of pavillions...or sometimes just platforms in an area of special interest...or a Cha Noh Yu house. That and the creation of living bonsai art and the casting of gongs and chimes. Imagine the adventures of those men? Must have been great to hunt plants for a living!!
