New flower spikes! (Orchid)

I've just found two new flower spikes on my Cattleya orchid! This will be my first rebloom on one of these.

I'm looking forward to seeing it Meanie , mine was a first rebloom as well and I believe a slightly different colour from the first time ,I could check that by looking at my old photos !

I've been to have a look and it was deffinately more purple the first time it flowered , having said that I believe it is darkening as each day goes by !

They require more light and heat than the more common orchids such as Phalaenopsis Amy. If like me you bought it in bloom, then it would have been forced to flower under precise controled conditions.

Congratulations....quite an achievement!

It is for me Karen!!

Well, I used to think I could manage a phaleonopsis, but since none of mine have flowered for ages now, I think I have gone wrong somewhere. I think I shall bin the lot of them, they just sit there, not growing, not flowering, not dying...phfff! Taking up space and doing nothing.....right fed up with them I am!! lol....you can tell it's february by my mood!!

Karen - I have two Phals that are just producing their first flower spikes in over two years! Admittedly, they have done a fair bit of growing....

You deff. need patience , I must admit there have been several times when I have complained about the space they take up Karen but then when they do flower , well ! it was worth it ............

Hmmmm......

I think that one of the other pseudobulbs is producing spikes too now!

Mine hit the compost bin two days ago....sorry!

17 Feb, 2011

It's a little cold still to be putting them outside Karen!!!

I think I've traumatised you Meanie....you seem to be in a state of denial!! I still have two little ones upstairs though...I forgot to bin them, so they've been temporarily reprieved!

Oh, I did take delivery of three plants of 'epipactis gigantea' this week, so perhaps I'll do better with the outdoor ones!

I'm jealous!
Was it from Rare Plants Karen?
I've been checking their site out a bit lately, especially this.......

This is getting a bit like forum poker!

WHoa! That's a-ma-zing! Like it's wearing stripey pjs! No, it was from Beth Chatto, the Epipactis. I've also ordered three hardy marsh orchids from Thompson Morgan!

Oh lordy, now I've gone and spent money on 'rare plants' thanks Meanie ;) lol

Ok - I'll raise you! I think that one of my Lapageria rosea may be germinating!! The compost looks to be lifting anyway.....

Well I've just been drooling over this in next month's 'The Garden' Beautiful plants! Too cold here I fear, but can't wait to see yours. I think you have won the kitty Meanie!

17 Feb, 2011

Thank you Karen!
It's your fault actually as it was you who recommended Plants of Distinction to me!!!!

17 Feb, 2011

Well you certainly got me back with that Rare Plants site!! I haven't ordered yet though..just saved the basket for later! If I buy some of their 'last few' bulbs, tulips, what will I do with them at this time of year Meanie? any idea?

17 Feb, 2011

I'd pot them up ready for next spring. That may be because I keep finding bulbs that I've forgot about though!!
Check these out!

Whoa! The tropaeolum and the orchid.......oh goodness...the price!!!! ;))))

17 Feb, 2011

If I thought it would do any good for me I would have a punt at the orchid.....

18 Feb, 2011

I agree, that is the most beautiful of all! I didn't know there were so many tropaeolums though and I do love them. I am thinking of introducing T.speciosum in to the garden this year...such a lovely late flowering colour, especially against dark green conifers. I don't have any big dark conifers, but I may be able to find somewhere for it.....on the side of the greenhouse perhaps.....we'll see!
