Thanks Helen, I am still thinking its a crabapple, quince is much larger, if its a crabapple then I envy you, all that jam to be made, wait for now and see if anyone else comments, if not take some to the GC and ask,

Definitely not a quince. I think it more like a crab apple or ornamental apple. Many years ago had a tree with apples like that. It was quite a sight when all the apples were red/yellow.

think we are getting somewhere now, so if its crabapple we know you can eat it, jam etc, ornamental cannot be eaten,

Well ornamental wouldn't be nice to eat, they are grown for their profusion of coloured apples I would think, but you could use them for jelly, they are just too small to do much else with.

thanks everyone. They create such a lovely colour just now and in the spring the blossom is lovely so it is great value in the garden.

If it is a crab apple, then it makes a nice jelly. Considering the mess some fruiting trees make, when they shed large quantities of inedible fruit......it needs some thought before siting near pavements or footways. We have a tree in the street that drops what look like tiny apples in large quantities. They squash and trample about. Even the road sweeper man commented. If carefully sited in a big enough garden or park they are OK for blossom and late colour.
