View looking towards the wildlife pon... Pictures by Grenville
View looking towards the wildlife pond with the classical statue.
This area on the lower deck features a wildlife pond and water cascade. To the side is a narrow passage where we have created a woodland garden and tree stumpery that caters for the needs of a variety of shade - loving plants including native Ferns,Hostas, Hellebores, tree ferns, & Chinese wild ginger. In front of the wildlife pond the plants have been carefully colour themed, using shades of lime green, acid yellow and chocolate brown. This area is directly opposite the Italianate garden with the temple ruin folly, and provides a stark contrast to the symmetrical and classical formaility of the Italian garden. There are two areas in the garden, and the upper raised deck features an exotic garden, Southern Hemisphere garden and a gravel garden. The whole garden measures 20 feet by 18 feet, and is the smallest garden to open for The National Gardens Scheme. It was given a whole page feature in the famous N.G.S Yellow Book 2007.The majority of plants are growing in pots or containers throughout the entire garden.

Hi Joey .Many thanks for your kind comments. Yes we also have the age old problem of slugs and snails-especially bad this year due to the damp conditions. We have frogs and a huge toad that help, but we also use wildlife friendly snail bait to keep them in check. A friend who is a hoticulturalist recommended we use them and also they apparently do not harm the birds who visit the garden as well. Most garden centres will supply the bait. All the best and happy gardening. Grenville.

Hi Grenville - everything looks so lush and healthy it is so beautiful! Apart from the wildlife that you attract to this area, do you have any top tips for keeping pests away? I really suffer with slugs in my garden...
