this i got from my grandmother and i have had it for a little while but it looks horrible and looks dead/may be dead

I agree with Blodyn. Repotting would be good. It looks like it got too much water. They really like to dry out between waterings.

It doesn't look too happy. Try repotting it in some fresh gritty compost. It looks like a type of Aloe.
