You don't see many if any stag beetles these days. Used to see a lot when I was a girl a very long time ago.

Hi, Bornagain! It is about 1.57 inches. I think it's Polyphylla fullo but I'm not sure.

I've had a look at polyphilla and he does look similar, I think it mentioned hazel beetle?:-)

Oh, thank you, Bornagain, very much! The literal translation of this beetle's name from my language is a marble-coloured cockchafer. Don't know its English name...

How could you have touched it? I love all Insects, but these hard-shelled
ones look scary. I know its probably a protection cover, and it cannot
help being ugly. Anyway its not looks that count is it?
Probably a lovely little Chappie/Lassie and does a lot of good for
Nature.....

Hi Uma, his babies are naughty and eat hazel roots, but he is harmless apparently. Here in UK they are called pine chafers so apparently they harm pines too. The larvae are 6cm - 8cm long, over 3"! and are similar to those of the cockchafer. The adults fly 1 hour after sunset then are motionless all day (that's what it says anyway) So he is a pest but very handsome...and not as big a pest as man, his young only eat roots while we chop down whole forests of trees and not for food:-)
