Are you building a canal!!

18 Nov, 2009

two weeks ago my daughter Lillys basement bedroom flooded.....only done it once before.....but it wont be doing it again. last friday we spent the evening baling out the water building up out side her subterranial window.we figured out the only way to stop it was to give the water an escape root under the lawn.....with more rain forcast tomorrow and all my menfolk busy out working. i decided to give it a go......its taken me three days and lots and lots of tea breaks ......so when it presistenly poors it down tomorrow i am going to enjoy watching it flow away....;-))

Did you find anything interesting, Sandra, in the soil you dug out ?

18 Nov, 2009

Oh bless you that looks good but where is it going? lol Are you going to fill ithe bottom with rubble? or is it a a lap pond for fish??? I do wish you luck in your hard work its so miserable being flooded.

18 Nov, 2009

TT i found some animal bones...not sure what sort but ill put them back when ive finished...i'm delighted with it and it will never flood again as long as we keep the pipe clear. it was easy to smile at this point it was finished.....lol

Enjoy the stella ...;)))

18 Nov, 2009

Did you dig it all yourself Sandra? If so, well done. When I first looked, I thought it was a grave for a very tall thin person!!!

18 Nov, 2009

Wow Sandra........Well done you.......What do we need men for aye?

18 Nov, 2009

all myself Paul but it took me three days..my husband Julian has been in work and when he does get a day at home theres a greenhouse roof needing his attention. and i enjoyed the achievment...;-))

18 Nov, 2009

Hi Sandra !. I hope you've been able to stop the flooding.

18 Nov, 2009

thanks Hywel....i've put the pipe in the bottom now...it will get tested in the rain tomorrow...then i can put it all back.

18 Nov, 2009

Good luck ! I hope it works. I hope the weather calms down :o)

18 Nov, 2009

19 Nov, 2009

Gold medal for marathon effort!

19 Nov, 2009

Well done on all that hard work.

19 Nov, 2009

thank you...;-)) weather still blowing a whooly but not much rain so my trench still not tested....im now waiting for rain...lol

19 Nov, 2009

My god you deserve a medal, but then thats us women all over just get on with the job.

19 Nov, 2009

Well done then Sandra. I shan't argue with you if you can dig a trench like that in three days, you must have upper arms like tree trunks!!!!!!!

19 Nov, 2009

my arms are having trouble doing anything today Paul...but its raining now so ill be able to see if its working.

19 Nov, 2009

Let's hope so. I see all down the west of the country are having horrendous amounts of rain. We're lucky, it's been beautiful here today although windy. But even the windy weather of late has done me a favour as it's dried gardens out so I can get on them and cut grass that's still growing. I did a fairly full days work today!

19 Nov, 2009

i did a few days last week for one of my customers. it was windy but dry...

had constant showers most days this week, but the wind has been mad....its the payback for living by the sea.
in the past we have lost a shed, a greenhouse and a polytunel cover. we now have a small wooden shed which is tied down with a big net off the beach trenched in.
we've lived here for seventeen years and have learnt to live with it.

19 Nov, 2009

It's windy enough here, but I don't think I could cope with any worse, near the sea. I think I'll stay inland!!

19 Nov, 2009

i can see your point some nights....we were a bunch of townies when we moved in.....very naive about what living on such an exposed site meant. maybe if we had we wouldn't have moved here. thank god for the naivety because we have all become wind proof and love it here...

19 Nov, 2009

OMG how fit are you? well done you do deserve a medal......well two really

20 Nov, 2009

thanks DD
pipes in the bottom now and its al filled in again...only took a couple of hours to put it all back....

20 Nov, 2009

Just caught up with this amazonian effort ... I felt my back crink just looking at the photo. Hope it's worked out well.

22 Nov, 2009

it has worked so far Bernieh....people in the north of England have had much worse flooding than us. sooo much rain...

22 Nov, 2009

Yes I've seen some of the reports on the news programs over here - quite a deluge in some places. Good to hear the trench has worked out.

22 Nov, 2009

Wow! Sandra..I can almost feel your poor tired arms...
I too live in a wind exposed area and know what you are saying..tie it down or it is gone!
I certainly hope your canal does the job...good for you and your ingenuity!

22 Nov, 2009

the rain it comming down in torrents and the wind id howling but the basement seems dry...whoop whoop....

22 Nov, 2009

My word Sandra...ten out of ten for your work. I am sure it will work wonders, but I am hoping the weather will get better, and you will just chill out :)))

22 Nov, 2009

i been chilled all weekend...theres loads to do outside but i think i would take off in the wind. me and my daughter Lilly lit a nice fire in the shed today to dry some of our herbs...it was lovely in there with the fire roaring....

22 Nov, 2009

Wow Sandra thats a feat you've achieved! Good luck with it all....and I hope it drains the water away!

22 Nov, 2009

I hope the plan works for you Sandra. That is a very neat job by the looks of it. Are you putting a drainage pipe in or just making it into a seepage gravel channel? You must be very fit is all I will say!!!!! It's been pouring with rain here today.

23 Nov, 2009

drainage pipe is n the bottom and its all filled in again now...it been working hard carrying all the water away i'm pleased to report....

23 Nov, 2009

great!!!

24 Nov, 2009

Sandra:

Wow! You definitely deserve a tea break! That's an
incredible amount of work!

By the way -- can you send some of that rain here to
San Diego? ...we haven't had any in many, many
months...and it's has been warm and very dry. : > )

25 Nov, 2009

Well done Sandra. You really do get down to earth, You are a real Nurserywoman . Congratulations.

25 Nov, 2009

thanks Poaannua..;-))

it took about ten hours over three days....lots and lots of tea breaks......

i wish we could send you some rain Delonix....

26 Nov, 2009

Sandra:

and it was 84 degrees F. / 29 degrees C. and
very, very dry.

27 Nov, 2009

28 Nov, 2009

Sandra:

It sounds like a very comfortable winter's day
with the exception of the slight frost. : > )

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday! Thanks!

28 Nov, 2009

Great work. I seem to remember marguerite putting in this sort of system as well when she was in Queensland. Seemed a staandard practice so works well. Well done.

20 Dec, 2009

Hats off Sandra

27 Dec, 2009

thank you..;-))

27 Dec, 2009

Great job you have done there, the soliders will be calling around for you to help dig their trenches or the building trade for foundations. Some thing to be proud of yourself for.
