Kniphofia 2

Kniphofia 2 (Kniphofia)

Our red hot pokers from the southern end of the bed. We were given these after my husband asked the tenant in his grandparents old house if he could have ONE. They had lived in the house circa 1900 to 1946. In 1998 he was surprised to see the plants were still in the garden, although they had been allowed to spread all over the former hen run. The birds, especially the tits and wood peckers, love them and soon strip off the florets. I cut off the outer damaged and rotting leaves each autumn and tie up what is left. I then prune them back to approx. 45cms. to stop them blowing about in the wind and it protects the emerging flowers. I have found the rotting outer leaves smell like a sewage works if left on the plant. The original plants were probably planted before the First World War
