Those raised beds are brilliant, Ian, you have worked hard (added no doubt by more cups of coffee, etc). I like the idea of the arch and the vine too.

Good Ian.! Now I'm waiting to see what you'll grow. I know it will be veggies but which ones.
24 Oct, 2009
Good job, Digger! This will be fantastic next year...and now you have all winter to decide what you're going to grow in the beds and on the trellis and the arch! How exciting is that, eh?
;-)

Thanks Gee, Two coffee's and 'some' fags got the work done! Lol
Thanks Suey. :~)))
Hi Kimmie, It will be lovely walking down there to pick some veggies for dinner and pinching a grape or two on the way past. :~)))
Morgana, Thanks :~))
Cheers David :~))
Hywel, There isn't room for potatoes :~(( but carrots, peas, beans, lettuce, spring onions, (toms and cucumbers in the poly tunnel) will definately be in there and I'm spoilt for choice with the rest. Mainly things that don't take up to much space!
Hi B. I have been wanting to do this since I started growing my own (a whole two years ago! ! !) so I hope I can make it work for us. Plus Carol said something yesterday that made it all worth while, " I can get down there in my chair!"
Cheers Holly, Not only for my veg but for our Holly to get in among it all and see, day by day, what is happening. I can't wait to watch her face when the first shoots come through.
Thank you all for your lovely comments, I'm one very happy bunnie with this side of the garden :~))))))))))

I don't have space for potatoes in the garden either but I'll grow them in tubs again. They are the best vegg I had this year. The garden ones were a miserable failure.
24 Oct, 2009
hywel my brother grows veg in hanging baskets and hanging bags along his fence, he only has a small garden, so i might try some next year, and going to get one of them potatoe bags to, he says you can get quite a few in them if layered
24 Oct, 2009
This is a great idea San. Top marks to your brother for ingenuity. Lol
Hywel, I think I might find room for a few but not on the same scale as I did this year, I could have kept the local farm shop supplied! Lol
24 Oct, 2009
lol ian,,its ok growing them but if to many its keeping them isnt it, just have to pass some on to friends and family if you have to many :o)

San, storing spuds is really easy! I just rubbed off the dirt and threw them into a potato sack and stuck them in the back of the shed. We had three sackful's in there at one time but where down to one now with half a sack in the back porch (handy to get to) The only thing to watch is not to use plastic sacks as these tend to make them sweat and rot set's in!
24 Oct, 2009
ok thanx ian will remember that, i want to give a few things a go if i get chance, just to see if i like the veggie gardening :o))
24 Oct, 2009
I find veggies sooooo easy, You plant them, water them, pick them and eat them. Lol No worrying about over wintering or how to keep them going, they just grow and then you start again next year. :~)))
24 Oct, 2009
dont forget the cabbage whites ian, do you put a net over your veggies, i read you have to give space between plants and net cause then eggs cant be layed on leaves, see i have been doing my homework lol
24 Oct, 2009
Well done you. Lol
I don't grow brasicas myself, they take up to much room but you also have carrot root fly! this lays eggs near the carrots (in the soil) and the lava then burrow into the carrots. Nasty little things they are but they only fly at ground level and if you put up fleece to about 30 inches they can't get over the top! They also locate the carrots by smell so by companion planting you can stop them that way.
Blight! this is a nasty fungus that attacks potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and the likes, generally worse in warm wet conditions (like the summers we've had just lately!)
There are plenty of problems with veggies but no worse than the ones you have to deal with already!
Aphids can be a problem to. Lol

didnt know about the carrott probs so thats good to know ian, ive grown spuds before and was ok no probs there but you never know, so good luck with the veggie beds ian, well done :o))
25 Oct, 2009
Cheers San, I think if your just growing small amounts then you shouldn't get to many probs!
Good luck with yours :~))
25 Oct, 2009
thanx ian ;o)
25 Oct, 2009
Another trick with carrots is to grow them in containers over three ft. high!
25 Oct, 2009
What, like hanging baskets? Lol!
25 Oct, 2009
Errr not quite Hatter, Lol
But certainly in 45 gallon drums or in a deep planter stood on top of something high! I had a wander down the allotments this summer and saw all sorts of ideas. Someone had bolted a planter to the side of his shed with carrots in, others were using oil drums, it's all down to imagination and your garden layout really. Something to think about though?
25 Oct, 2009
Bl***y H***!!!!
Love the pic, I think, maybe, em.............should I be scared???
Yes, LOTS to think about!
25 Oct, 2009
Fantastic job Ian !! :-))

Oh by the way the two tall uprights in the right hand bed are the framing of a trellis that is going to make an arch. The two on the floor are for the left hand side!
