Garden visitor - Pale-headed Rosella (Platycercus adscitus)

The Pale-headed Rosella is endemic to north-eastern and eastern Australia. It's a medium-sized, broad-tailed parrot, with a pale head and all white, or blue and white cheek patches. The underbelly is mainly blue, with red under the tail. The back is yellow with dark flecks.

I would be out in my garden rain wind or shine to catch one of these on camera and be able to feed it.

so pretty

Thanks all - this bird is quite something to see! Morgana we don't feed these birds though - the birds in my photos are all wild so we are not tempted to try and feed them. I have thought about setting up some bird feeders but I think the horrible scrub turkeys that live around here would eat it all anyway!

What a shame but then I think on the other hand if they got use to you feeding them and you moved would it be harder for them to go back to looking for food in the wild, I think this when I feed the birds here

That's my thinking as well Morgana - I really don't want these beauties to become dependent on a birdfeeder. Rather see them eating what they should. Besides, there's too many of them anyway and so many varieties - I don't think I could keep up!

Thanks Janey - these birds are a welcome sight and the pair that visited while my hubbie and I were out gardening certainly brightened up our morning.

Thanks BB - the background shows all the grass that grows in the bush around our property. As you can see there's not much green there.

Thanks Rhodea - we're very lucky to be able to see birds like this. This place I live in now is the first place I've lived where I can see such a massive variety of birdlife.

I ditto what Homebird said(looks like a budgie). It seems incredible to think, in your part of the world, you can walk outside in your gardens and see such amazing birds. We only ever see them in zoos etc!

Paulthegardener - it does look like a budgie. This beautiful bird is around 30 cms high and is a parrot that is native to northeastern Oz. It eats grass and tree seeds and would you believe loves Scotch thistle which pops up as a weed around here.

They wouldn't like our climate but maybe we'd have some food they like then!
