Gardeners World Plant List 10th July 2009

Gardener’s World returned on Friday with a visit to RHS Rosemoor, a previous winner of gardener of the year (entries are now being accepted for this year’s competition) and a wonderful herb garden from the future (well, kind of) :o)
Toby started by giving ideas for scented Clematis:
Clematis armandii
Clematis Montana (Himalayan clematis)
Clematis x triternata ‘Rubromarginata’
At RHS Rosemoor Toby was getting inspiration for his cottage garden and spoke briefly about
Rosa ‘Ferdinand Pichard’
Then he found some inspiration for his cottage garden:
Astrantia ‘Hadspen Blood’ – for scent
Lychnis coronaria ‘Oculata Group’ (Rose campion)
Eryngium x zabelii – thistle with 2 seasons of interest
Sedum telephium (stonecrop)
Then back to the roses:
Rosa ‘Felicite Parmentier’ – pink/white with spicy fragrance
Rosa ‘Madame de la Roche-Lambert’ – moss rose
Carol’s class were learning to keep flowers looking at their best, but the plant she said she’d wouldn’t touch was
Knautia macedonica (Macedonian scabious)
Toby’s alpine hardy geranium which apparently spreads along the ground well
Geranium x antipodeum ‘Pink Spice’
Flowers for his cottage garden inspired by his trip to RHS Rosemoor:
Astrantia major ‘Ruby Star’
Lychnis coronaria ‘Alba’ (White-flowered rose campion)
The plant Toby used to tie his garden together
Foeniculum vulgare ‘Purpureum’ (Bronze fennel)
Later on he also planted a rose for fragrance:
Rosa ‘Strawberry Hill’
One of the gardens featured was that of Judith Hann, who used to present Tomorrow’s World. A fantastic herb garden!!
Rosa gallica ‘Versicolor’ (Rosa Mundi)
Melissa officinalis ‘Aurea’ (Variegated Lemon balm)
Allium tuberosum (Garlic chives)
Satureja montana (Winter savory)
Myrrhis odorata (Sweet cicely)
Alice’s planted up some aromatic herbs which she likes to use in herb tea (I don’t think you can buy a PG bush).
Mentha x piperita (Black peppermint)
Stevia rebaudiana – very sweet
Aloysia citrodora (Lemon verbena)
The previous winner of gardener of the year was featured and I really liked his wall of broken pots.
Phyllostachys nigra (Black bamboo)
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Malepartus’
Back at Rosemoor they spoke about:
Dahlia ‘Twyning’s After Eight’
Fuchsia ‘Tom Thumb’
Carol this week got to enthuse about hardy geraniums
Geranium nodosum – For dark shade
Geranium pratense (Meadow cranesbill) – For out in the open
Geranium ‘Rosanne’
Geranium psilostemon (Aremenian cranesbill)
I hope you enjoy the weekend, and happy gardening :o)

Thanks for the detail, Peter.
I've found all the GoY photos and blogs of Hampton Court Flower Show much more informative and encompassing than the BBC programmes. Well done GoY :o)

You're welcome :o)
I'll be wary of the fennel, Spritz.
TT, Clarice, I agree, it's nice to get personal perspectives from lots of people, not just one.

i dont know what it is about GW but i just cant get to gel with toby at all, he seems weak in comparison to others before him and i believe chris beardshaw should front it.
As for that alys fowler, god help us, here is a woman who was trying to prise a plant out of a peat pot a couple of weeks ago, hope they soon see sense and replace her.
I love joe, and carol is my favourite of all.
Anyway dont watch it anymore and my garden centre has now stopped having the mag as well, thank god.

There seem to be quite a few that don't like it much these days. As a beginner gardener I quite like it, Carol's my favourite too - just so enthusiastic.

I missed it yet again, so thanks, Peter! Now I can imagine it all. :-)
I wouldn't take that advice about the Fennel, though. It seeds itself all over the place and is very hard to control, let alone remove, as it has a tap root that goes to Australia!
