Visit to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct North Wales

Thought you might like to see some pictures from a visit to North Wales last Summer. My husband’s family come from this area and so we decided to revisit the attractions that he remembers from Childhood.

His Grandparents lived in Trevor. This is Trevor basin it’s very busy with canal boats

We’ll now walk across the famous Aquaduct – built by Thomas Telford.

Here’s a view looking over the Aquaduct – it was about here, that we’ve been led to believe, my Husbands Great Great Grandmother was blown over the edge of the Aquaduct – Thankfully, she was saved by her crinolin dress and landed in trees below…!! This is a true story which has been passed down through the years – It apparently made the National papers too!

Here I am taking my chances walking across the Aquaduct! (Didn’t realise my hair was so long!)

Some beautiful views and you can see the Railway Viaduct in the distance.

We then walk on to the drawbridge at Fron. Hubby’s Mum used to take him in his pram from her Parents house in Trevor across the Aquaduct and then past the drawbridge to visit Auntie Sue.

Auntie Sue’s House was still there… it’s at the end of this terrace. We weren’t brave enough to ask if we could take a picture of the house from the garden…!

This roughly shows how far we walked…!

Back in the car – a final view…! And a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Thats always our favourite spot to have breakfast when we travel to North Wales, I and my daughters have walked along the aquaduct many times whilst poor hubby has been having a ducks fit yelling at us to come back, lol, he`s petrified of heights, mind you he always asked us to take his camera to get some good shots for him as well, lol...
Lovely photo`s Petal and always good to hear about the family and memories of days gone by...

Super blog Tracey, home territory for me! My aunt lived in Fron and Mum and I walked over the aqueduct many times, back then the footway was in such a bad way there were holes in it, you could see the river below, you just had to jump over them - before the days of Health and Safety of course!! I had heard the story of the lady and the crinoline - it is bound to be in some archive somewhere. Ah memories :o)

Lovely blog to remind us of the pleasures of the summer to come. Thank you.

The biography of Thomas Telford is well worth reading.

Hi All, I'm so glad you've enjoyed the walk! Especially for you Neellan! It was during this holiday that we unknowingly "met"! (Long Story!!) I'm always amazed at how much my OH remembers and also how things haven't changed too much as well! I love this part of North Wales and we managed to revisit lots of our favourite places last year - might put on a few pictures of the other places we visited.
ML - It might be a bit out of the way from Gwitherin, but it's well worth the visit!
Kidsgran - OH's Grandmother was a Housekeeper at Chirk Castle! We've got associations there too!

Enjoyed your blog Tracey . . . not sure I'd be brave enough to walk across the aqueduct though. When I'm up high I get a strong urge to jump!!

Thanks Kath - glad you enjoyed it! Sheila - I'll admit to a strange feeling when you're walking across! But the views are worth it!

I'd be ok until I thought of the crinoline lady and Neelan peering through the holes to the river below ~ ~ ~ ~ makes me feel all wobbly. :0)

Beautiful scenery though

Pam - I think I'd be a bit of a wimp and not walk across, if I saw the holes and also the missing railings too!

Wow what a great blog! Really enjoyed the story about OH's great great GM too. Its really amazing that Neelan knows about the story too. The walk across the viaduct looks scary but compelling. I would have to go across for views like that.
