GARDENING MOAN

“Most of gardening is enjoyable. That’s why we keep doing it. But there are always problems and frustrations, new pests to deal with, disappointing plants and Bad Weather: I know there’s nothing we can do about it, but it does seem we’ve been getting hit harder and harder…17C daytime high in mid July, full grey/black cloud cover and rain with high winds nearly every day. I’m going to loose the battle with these weeds – what is it that lets them thrive while my poor plants struggle? Just look at these poor things for example, so tiny, crying out for warm sunshine. Oh Well, maybe tomorrow will be better.”

Yes you do seem to have had more than your share of rain this year, it's especially unfair as though you don't have a hosepipe ban you don't really need one. your plants do seem late and in need of some warmth, I hope the weather swings the other way.

Sending you sunshine Peonyrose - hope it gets to you soon.

We have had the sun but no rain for weeks until today. Funny growing year with some plants very behind, some of my plants have stayed small or not flowered yet such as my Phlox paniculatas which show no sign of flowers yet, last year all out in July.
Well heres wishing that my grey skies mean the sun is with you!

Mad

The past week has been unbearable here in the East. So hot that plants were wilting and no rain for several weeks. I was unable to do anything over the past 3 days with temperatures of 31c and higher, so I'm rejoicing at the welcome rain today, the grey skies and lower temperatures. What a pity we can't have a bit of each others' weather.
My daughter returned to Scotland from here, where even she who likes hot sunny weather found it too hot. On getting home, she had to put the heating on! Amazing, such differences on a small Island like our's.

Rain? What rain?? It tried, half heartedly, for about an hour here then gave up

I obviously didn't rain dance for long enough, it spitted about for about 3 hours spotted about for another hour, went came back and pitter patted for another hour and now it has stopped ah well it did wet the plants and gave the grass a wash and that is about as much as we are going to get for today. Fingers crossed for some more later on this week. The only saving grace is that it isn't blistering hot, what we have had will have done some good, we are still in need of lots more, off to do some more dancing. (NOT A PRETTY SIGHT) lol

I hope summer returns for you soon. We've had drizzly showers, but the soil is still dry.

Hi All,
Yes we seems to getting extremes from one end of the county to the other just now. Let's hope for some temperate weather soon. I'm moaning about rain every day but I can't even imagine how I'd cope with a hosepipe ban!
Keep dancing Olive.....maybe if you all join in it will work! Do you think it could be all this Highland Dancing going on up here just now for the tourists that is keeping the rain here?
Yes Mad, we'll have no small bills this summer - it was only 6C last night here. I have not had my heating off yet this year......but it is easier to keep warm - there's not much you can do when it's too hot, it's so exhausting isn't it.

yes, the heat is exhausting, but your grass is green, that's your bonus. Mine is turning a funny shade of brown. We got rain yesterday and more forecast for later on today, that will do me nicely then. Be able to take the clogs of and sit with my feet up lol.

Shhhhh! With all that success they'll be sending for you and your clogs from all over the south-east.

I wonder if there is any place on earth when the weather is perfect for plants. Maybe gardening wouldn't have any challenge if it was easier to do. Perhaps this is why we garden. Trying to beat the odds of mother nature.

Thanks Sandra, my geraniums have not really come to anything in the garden so I am going to lift them, pot them up and pop them in the greenhouse - I will over winter them in the conservatory as house plants! I'm beginning to get some colour in the garden but lost most of my summer bulbs - they appeared to rot in the very wet soil. I'm sorry to say our weather has not improved at all, but the forecast tells us it will be bright on Sunday (fingers crossed).

I'm sure of it Valerie - but I wish she had been a bit gentler on us all here in the UK this year.

We have actually got and are getting rain today, it has been nice and steady and no wind with it so it is doing heaps and heaps of good. First really rainy day we have had in weeks and weeks, the ground is so hard it makes it difficult to dig, planted some shrubs yesterday, was relying on it raining and it hasn't let me down. Hope you get some sunshine this weekend Peonyrose, goodness knows you are definitely needing some. It has been a strange summer, hot and very hot in places with rain all down the west and north of the British Isles and nothing to speak of to the East side. We are never happy completely with the weather, some get lots of rain others get none. I am so tired of dragging out the hosepipe this will be a great change for me not to have to water for a week at least. The rain dancing must have gone awry somewhere along the way, think the vibrations of the clogs must have travelled northwards. Will cease dancing now, hope you get sunnier weather soon.
