A Struggle Working In This Heat...and, Now To Keeping the Garden Alive W...

It really has been a steaming hot few days here in Essex and the grass in most of my customers’ gardens is going brown. We’ve had so little rain and what was promised today barely amounted to much more than sprinkle.Certainly didn’t have much effect on the levels in my water butts.
I must say, I have struggled terribly in the heat, working in my customers’ gardens.I’m getting too old I think and have felt very unwell this week. Even walking up and down with the mower was a challenge. The heat is a definite contributor to that, along with my many ailments. But, most of all, I find it a real struggle ,now, to climb a ladder and swing my heavy petrol hedge trimmer around. Not to mention the fumes from the engine which really make me I’ll.I wear a mask and goggles…I must look rather strange with those and my straw hat with wet cloths hanging from it to keep me cool!!
So, I’m glad to say this week’s work is done(I started early today because I woke before 5 and couldn’t get back to sleep…so finished early too!) and we are now preparing for a weekend away in Hastings. We are going to stay in a lodge in a holiday camp so Paddy can come with us too.I’m sure he’ll really enjoy it as he hasn’t been away with us for a few years. Our son Lloyd used to look after him when we were at the other house but he didn’t come with us…he rents a flat with his girlfriend near where we used to live so he’s near his friends and work.(oh, and his favourite pub of course) But, of course, Lloyd used to water our plants too. So, I have dug out my old water timer (and surprisingly, it still works with new batteries) and , on the way home today, bought a hosepipe. I then spent an hour poking holes in it and then another hour or so getting soaked setting it up to water my pots, borders, patches of repaired grass and greenhouse.Let’s hope it will work.It used to be successful when I just watered pots with it many years ago but I’ve never used it over such a large area before. So, fingers crossed that I don’t come home to frazzled plants on Monday.I have it set to water for 2 minutes every 6 hours.

It will be nice to have a break and maybe we’ll even visit a garden or two.

Pray for my plants, won’t you?
Happy Gardening
Paul

Hope you have a nice break Paul :-), don't know how you've managed to keep gardening in the heat! All I ve managed is a bit of deadheading bit of sunbathing and a barbecue lol.
All the trouble you ve gone to to water your plants you can gaurantee it'll rain now ;-)

Ha ha , yes. I wouldn't mind if it rains in Essex, as long as it doesn't rain in Hastings. (But, in reality, it's more likely the other way round as we have so little rain here in South East Essex.)

I hope your plants will be all right Paul. Maybe the weather will improve over the week end.
We've had rain here today :D Even on the hottest day elsewhere, it rained here !

Enjoy your break :)

Yes, must seem a bit unfair but, I'd rather we had rain than what we've had last two days!

I don't think it's unfair. I'm glad we had rain. I could not have coped with those temperatures, although it did reach 28 C on Tuesday. It was horrible :(

Yes something stupid like 34 C here yesterday......horrendous! And my neighbour came home while I was out washing my car.It was still hot but had clouded over by now and she said "What a lovely day" . I'm afraid I didn't think it was lovely!

34 ! ... I would have died lol
Some people think the hotter the better. I don't ...

No.....19/21C with sunshine and light cloud and a gentle breeze for me.
I hate such high temperatures. Just makes me ill. I still feel drained and in agony. It hurts to breath.

I'm the same. It makes me feel ill too.
Hopefully it will cool down now. Take care ... and enjoy your week end :)

Paul...you'd have been happier up here this week! It does sound very exhausting, and I'm so sorry you have been struggling. Hope you have a lovely break! :)

Put those plants in the bath with 3" of water.

My goodness Paul, even though I garden for a couple of the older folk around here,I haven't done much at all this week. I honestly don't know how you managed to do anything. I'm not able to use one my hosepipe much as we are on meter, so if the water doesn't come from one of my 4 water tubs we recycle washing up water and the like. Hope you enjoy your trip to Hastings.

My two water butts are empty Waddy and we are on a water meter but I've got to water the plants or it'll be much more expensive than the water.and, with the gardening, it's a case of having to I suppose but not sure how much longer I'll manage.
Crikey, Diane........it would be a long haul taking all the plants from the greenhouse at the back of the garden to the first floor bathroom although it would be a good idea if the bathroom were downstairs.
We are in Hastings now Karen. The lodge is fantastic an Paddy seems to like wandering around the decking area which has a gate so ideal for him.and, we can see the sea from the kitchen, lounge and decking area so really lovely! We have just got our keys so a quick cuppa then into Hastings I think.

Hopefully you're enjoying the sea breeze now and are beginning to feel better. Hope you both + Paddy have a lovely time. The heat doesn't really bother me but some rain would be nice :)

Lovely here Gee...just sat outside a pub/restaurant in the old town of Hastings and had something to eat! Fresh plaice for me. Very nice .and it was warm but not too warm sitting outside(as Paddy was with us)
Yes. Would like to get some rain now so people's grass grows otherwise, I'll have an enforced break!

Cheers Paul! Here's to a well earned break. Hope the weather stays fine for you and Paddy. :))
