New Life

Hello everyone, just a few quick snaps of some of the trees and bushes in the garden, hope you like the set of pictures I am posting to this blog. New life, I love the new shoots and colour of leaves on the trees at this time of the year, hope you like the photographs.

Oak Leaves

Christmas Tree

Berberis – the red leaves turn to have a hint of a pink splash in them before they turn to bronze.

Leylandi – don’t know which one, but it isn’t a fast growing one.

Garrya Elyptica – thought I had lost this from the cold cold winter months, but it has gone crazy with new leaves on all the branches. Hopefully will get some catkins, would really like some catkins and it has never produced any since I put it in. It did have them when I bought it, but none since. Think I pruned it wrongly, paid the price and now I am not pruning it again in the hope of seeing catkins. It looks a mess at the moment because all the dead leaves are hanging on to the branches and the new ones are bursting out.

Cannot for the life of me remember what this plant is called no doubt someone will know, it is a very vibrant orange shoot and then goes green with age. Very luminous.

And have saved the best till last, not a tree or a shrub but four little thrushes, hardly any room for them in the nest, they have grown so fast, mummy and daddy thrush are working like crazy to keep them fed and keep them warm . Just had to have a picture. There nest is very well hidden, under one of the low branches on one of the many christmas trees I planted in the borders. I chopped the main stem in the centre to stop them becoming too tall. They help keep the wind off the borders and give some shade also.

Hope you like the new shoots and thrushes I know I love them.

Olive it looks like Euphorbia griffithii `fireglow` to me - lucky you I`ve got one little straggly shoot left after last winter.
Like you I just love to see all the new green shoots on the shrubs it promises so much. I`ve got Berberis `bagatelle` which looks much like yours, and as for those little thrushes ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

yes ahhhhh they are beautiful, but then everything is extra special when it is new! You should see the parents attacking the wood pigeons when they go near the nest, they are very fiesty parents. lol pleased you like.

Me too Lincslass, so far so good, if only the sparrow hawk would stop visiting I would feel a little less feerful for them.

Stroller is right I think about the Euphorbia. Just amazing to see the tiny baby birds! Wonderful. New leaves and shoots, especially on trees, are one of the best joys of life aren't they? Amazing! So much beauty in a simple Christmas tree.

Karen I seem to recall a name like that so think Stroller is right. I love the shoots on christmas trees. The really big one was glowing red the other day and when I got up to look there are cones and they were maroon coloured all over it, changed colour now though and started to develop into bigger cones. I have always loved pine cones, think I will collect them for a basket by the hearth.

Sanbaz glad you like the pictures, I love christmas trees. :O)

Loved the picture of the babies .How did you manage to get so close ? We have scots pine trees in and around our garden as well as beech, so get plenty of cones which i spray silver and gold for christmas, plus they smell lovely on the fire and if you put them on the barby it flavours the food.

ooo that I have never done on the bbq, will have to collect them and try that one. thanks for the tip Rose. I like the smell of pine cones. The bird nest was right at the bottom of the christmas tree, so was easy to just lift the branch and snap them. Had to be quick before the mum got back to chase me off though. Not seen them since they fledged but we have a lot of fields around and about and an 80 acre wood at the side of us so she had plenty to look in for food for them, just hope they are ok.

I know it is really lovely here, not ours - rented but been here 32 years nearly. Lovely and secluded, with a large wood all around us. Great for bird watching, but at one bit had a lot of trouble with bunnies, have had to put a little wire mesh fence all around it to try and keep them out, it has worked to some extent, they only get in now from the field side way at the front of the house, not the major problem they were so fingers crossed it is all good.
