an amazing idea

the best ive seen for gardening especialy if you dont have much garden and you have bare walls.me my friend jim ,amy from of goy and her husband tony went to urban jungle yesterday in norwich . it sells a lot of the rarer egsotic type plants and rarer ones so its well worth a vissit . as it goes they were having a shift around so it wasnt looking its best but still good none the less.my friend jim went out of the greenhouse for a fag . next minnet excuse my spelling jim comes back in realy excited about an idea hed seen . when we went and looked it was the most amazing living wall for want of a better word. it was about 12-18" thick i guess bye about 15` tall and about 12` wide.it was two 3" posts banged into the ground and sticking up 15` but you could do this any size realy . jims going to make one on wheels to move it about in the sun for his veg.on the posts sticking out at 90 degrees to the posts were some 2″ × 4″ ofcuts about 8-12" long every few feet all the way along both posts . this in turn held a frame of 2″ × 4″ s with battening going from side to side every 10" aprox but you could make these the size you want to realy.on this batton they had got that shiny black membrane thats shiny and quite strong overlapped at the back with a gather and stapled to each batton.this left a trough filled with soil between every batton and as long as the wall was wide.they had planted a selection of plants of different colours and types. im know plantsman but i could see hostas, ferns and some ornimentle grasses .there were about 10-15 plants per row and about 20 rows so over 300 plants me and amy worked it out to . you water the top and i believe these were the more sun water loving plants and the water drains through to the next trough and waters that and so on and so forth till it gets to the bottem wear i think the plants were more shade loving and needed less water but i dont know . it was such an inspiring site . especialy as all the garden i have left realy is my fences.i have baught some i think 3 of them cage fence panels they use to keep people of building sites . i think when i build mine ill use these instead of wood and make lots of sculpted cement planters in rows above each other. i think id put a piece of hose and a piece of solid pipe along the top. block the end and drill holes in the pipe so i could just join my hose near the bottem and it would do the rest. i guess you could buy a little pump and put it in your rain water container . run that up to the blocked pipe with holes at the top but at the bottom have guttering running back into your rainwater butt. i will make one and keep you posted. i seriously hope ypou understand my spelling and probably terrible description.the photos will help fill in the gaps im sure . im also sure theres going to be an awfull lot of happy gardeners who see this idea . brilliant just brilliant . i realy do hope this inspires people .

i know its no wear near as exiting but i have a few friends on here who like to know what im drawing or working on and i know a lot of people like art much like gardens . i just finished a scotish deer hound for skillens friend and she was very happy i here with it . it lives in a castle now .i was very pleased and think this is one of my best dog portraits ive ever done .

i didnt have anything commissioned to draw so looked up big cats and came across a cat that is very seldom drawn or even talked about unless its a car . i like to do something different as the people who know of me probably know bye now . anyway its a jaguar . i thaught it was a lovley photo . i havnt finished it yet but you know ill keep you posted everyone . anyway take care and enjoy bye for now .

Thank you for the photos of the "living wall" together with the explanation and for sharing your own beautiful works of art with us. The dog looks lovely in his frame.

That was a brillliant idea wasn't it Leigh , there's no need for me to put my photo on , i'm looking forward to seeing yours and Jims different versions and ideas , I love Jims idea of putting Strawberries and veg in you could grow so much in all those rows ... .. That was a great day out we will be doing it again x

One word of caution about those living walls - they take a lot of watering, especially in hot weather. One Council in London planted one earlier this year and in three months it was dead. If you are prepared to check it every day and water it if necessary, then it's a good thing but if you want a low maintenance idea, then I would avoid it.

ok andrew i will take that onboard but i think ill rethink mine to make it last a lot longer and be a lot more frugal with the wet stuff . thanx that is well worth mentioning mate .

I really like this idea Leigh, it would be the perfect answer for the wall i have which is needing a total revamp, true it would need a lot of watering though i think it would be worth it.
The jag is coming on well, and i do like the dog lol xx

I might try this on a smaller scale with sempervivums in. They seem to love everything else I plant them in.
Cheers for the info.
