A Short Break In San Sebastian

We took my daughter to San Sebastian for the last night of her holiday with us, as we had visited before and were VERY impressed with the wonderful Pinxos (pinchos) served in every bar. These are small slices of bread topped with a mound of total deliciousness – creamed crab and prawn; ham, cheese, pureed hard-boiled egg topped with a curled anchovy; morcilla (blood sausage) with tomato paste topped with an olive … etc. etc. etc ……. each being about two-bites big and a feast for the eyes. The region is famous for them – and I’m not surprised! I wish now I’d taken a few photos to show you – but they were so delicious I ate them as soon as they were on my plate!

Anyway ….. while NOT filling our tums we were walking around San Sebastian enjoying the city and the lovely little gardens you come across along the way:

The planting of Agapanthus was fantastic on roundabouts along the riverside – shame I couldn’t get any closer!

The weather wasn’t always reliable – causing us to nip into a bar to escape a shower for yet another pinxo and glass of wine – aaaaah! Shame! ;o))) But the moody sky made for some interesting photos:

The garden outside our hotel had this lovely tree amongst its planting – can anyone help me out with identification please? The flowers were rather like small pieces of ‘Bottle-Brush plant.’

Hope you enjoyed the short wander round this lovely city – I’d recommend a visit just to experience the pinxos!

How very lovely. What a beautiful city. It's not a jacaranda tree is it?
You made my mouth water by describing those pinxos, if you put pinchos or tapas San sebastian into YouTube you will get a very good idea of the food ~ but I will warn you, it makes you very hungry! And I wish I could be there!

i think it is a silk tree or Albizia Julibrissin.
i only know cause i had one in my previous garden here and loved it ( i'll try to put a photo in Garden Pictures) i tried to take a cutting before we moved which has taken and i am thrilled, but its only wee still, so much tlc is needed!
i remember a gorgeous smell and the most fantastic and HUGE moths in it at night, -whilst sitting under it with the prov. glass of red! - i should think well worh trying one out in your garden, with a little winter protection though! you can get a smaller version which i believe is called an albizia rosea and would be easier to protect or even put in a large pot and moved in your Picos winters

sounded like a lovely afternoon in San Sebastian , bit different from your mountain rambles!! but you did manage get some plants in, in between the tappas LOL, great blog

Can't help with the tree, Nariz, but thank you for the lovely stroll. (Some friends have just got back from walking in the Picos - will tell you more when I've heard more!)

Thanks for your comments guys - as I said - San Sebastian is well worth a visit just to experience the Pinxos and bar culture, but then the city itself is so beautiful, built with a river running through its centre and on a large beach called 'La Concha' because it's in the shape of a shell ..... and all only 3 hours from my doorstep! Like Lori says "Lucky me!"

Thanks for the ID, Resi. I'll look out for the pot version of Albizia Rosea (rather have A.Julibrissin but running out of room in the garden).

Looking forward to your friends' feedback on the Picos, Sheila.

Get in touch again and go and visit, Hywel! I promise you, it's well worth it. :o)

Albizia! Saw lots in Australia.
Went to Bilbao and up to Pamplona on business but never got the chance to go to San Sebastian. It looks lovely. I loved the Basque country better than a lot of places in Spain, lots of greenery, some spectacular coastlines and super people.
I really should go again as a tourist..my niece is marrying a basque chap in August. Must make an excuse to visit as they live near Pamplona.
Dont remember pinxos, but I shant forget if I get there. I love fatata!

lovely place and photos :o)

Thanks Sanbaz and Tetrarch ... don't know of 'fatata.' Do you mean Fabada - the Asturian bean and pork stew?

4 Jul, 2011

No, its a bit like a cake done in a frypan, left overs, potato, eggs, a sort of solid omelette..my spelling might be wrong, my spanish almost non existant! In italian they call it a frittata.

She had come to live here Nariz, so I wouldn't be able to visit San Sebastian.
She's dead now anyway :o(

Aw Hywel. Shame! Why not branch out on your own? Or with Beryl? See a few lovely places.

Tetrarch: I think we call it a frittata too if it's left overs. Although a really good Tortilla (thick potato omelette) is hard to beat in many a Spanish bar. :o)

That'll do me!!
