Guggenheim and Broadband

The most exciting news first! We’ve got Broadband!!! I know you’re all thinking “so what?” but since moving here in October 2006 we’ve been struggling along with dial-up, then I found this fantastic site in 2008 but had to wait aaaaaages for it to load up, then even when it had I was unable to see most of your wonderful garden pictures as this wind-up machine would only display about four, then I’d get a series of blank rectangles and red crosses! Now your pictures load up immediately along with the blog or question … but then you all know that. Sorry – I’m just excited at the speed of this thing!

So …. now that I can do stuff, I thought I’d show you a picture of the famous Flower Puppy outside the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. Partner’s parents took a short cruise on the soon to be decommissioned Pride of Bilbao, so we took a 2.5 hour drive to see them for their short time on terrafirma, then while we were in the area decided to make a day of it and be tourists for the day – hence the Guggenheim and the Puppy. He’s made up of mainly Busy Lizzies, French Marigolds, Begonias and Lobelia and some green stuff that doesn’t seem to mind growing upside-down. He was dribbling, so I assume there’s some kind of watering system rigged up inside. Cute isn’t he? :o)

Isn't it marvellous to have quick access to the internet? We have never had dial up but just lately I think I may understand how frustrating it must be as my computer has been on a "go slow" for some days. I don't know what's the matter with it but I often have to wait many minutes for a page to load & I can't switch between tabs because they take so long to load. Posting almost anything has been terrible so I've almost stop posting. I've done everything I can think of but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

I downloaded a new antivirus a couple of days ago & today I set it to fully scan my 2 hard discs. I went back a while ago to see if it had finished yet & found that it had & had turned up at least a dozen trojans! I was flabbergasted when I saw the result! I've never before had more than 1 or 2! Since going down to the allotment I've used the computer a lot less than ever before. I've always tried to be very careful & have kept my antivirus programme up to date with the latest updates & I never visit "dodgy" sites. Now that these trojans have been detected & eliminated perhaps the computer will revert to its old speed & I can stop suffering & the frustration & get on with life on the internet as before.

¡Gracias, Nariz!

Thats fantastic Nariz! Looks just like my new pup...Lol! I love all the Spanish flower festivals and have been on the Pride of Bilbao a few times in the past....has it reached the end of it's working life? Will it be replaced by a new ferry?
You must be so pleased having access to the internet at home.....congratulations...it takes me back to the days whenever we wanted to check on anything....the cyber cafes were all we had....wasn't on GoY then so it was adequate...Lol!

Yes, Janey, the Pride of Bilbao has reached the end of its working life and is being sold for scrap. I understand P&O are also pulling out of Bilbao supposedly because they can't compete with the new timetable of Brittany Ferries running several times a week to Santander. Shame - but there it is! And yes, I'm delighted to be joining the 21st Century at last! Especially being able to see all the GoY photos. :o)

glad to hear you've joined us via broadband..I can still remember the long nights of dial up...
Look forward to seeing how your garden is progressing and some more pics of your magnificent countryside and those castles!

Just read through your blog again, Nariz, I like it still & it makes me feel grateful that we don't have dial up!

I see I haven't updated my comments on the slow down of my computer.

It now "flies" along once again. The problem wasn't the Trojans, as after they were eliminated it made no difference to the computer's speed as far as I could see. The problem was with the ROM module. The computer had to use the HDD to read & write & that's why it was taking so long. Once I made sure of the problem I bought a new, 1GB, ROM module. Added to the ROM originally installed, only 250MB, it made a vast difference in the speed! I was on cloud 9 for several weeks afterwards!!! I just couldn't believe the difference. Must have been like you when you finally got BB after years on Dial up! :-))

Well done Balcony! The sad thing is .... we got so used to it so quickly and now - if I have even a mega-second of delay - I'm moaning! Can't IMAGINE how I tolerated dial-up for almost 4 years! :o)

I sympathize with you, Nariz, as I'm the same now as well!
