fencing off without upsetting neighbours

our new house in terraced. One side has a high fence the other side has a fence about waist height. If you were my neighbours and I put trellis up in sections down the lower fence side would you think me rude?

i dont want to annoy the neighbours it wont block any of there light etc but I do prefer a bit more privacy, so thought a trellis section every 2 meters, about half a meter high would be better. I can always say the flowers planted below need it, ( I havent yet found climbers for shaded areas)
I must at this point add they are really nice neighbours and have been very helpful and friendly but sometimes I want to be in my garden when the kids are out and say nothing to anyone and just lose myself in my seeds.

in the mean time id anybody can suggest climbing plants for sahded areas would be great thanks

If i was your neighbour i would not mind at all, but if you get on so well with your neighbours why dont you just say to them, you fancy some trelis on top of the fence to grow some nice climbers up it.

Ditto Clarice. How shaded is it?. You can even grow some roses if its not too deep. Otherwise ivy, there are some lovely variagated forms and Hydrangea anomala petiolaris are self clinging, clematis alpina, chaenomeles speciosa and cotoneaster

before i put up my willow fence, we put trellis on top of the waist high fence, it looked great and didn't totally cut off the neighbours as you can still see through it, so id say go for it..

I'm sure they'd appreciate it if you told them what you were going to do - to make your garden even more beautiful!

That is exactly what I did. I, like you thought about it long and hard and it's turned out to be the ideal soloution. In the winter months when you dont spend so much time in the garden the climbers die back so you can see through, then in the summer months when you are having a barbie or just sitting with a glass of vino or two the Clematis and Roses give you the privacy you need and it also gives good support for the climbers as well.
It works for me.

i was actually talking to my neighbour who backs on to our garden yesterday and as they had put up the fence i did ask if she minded me growing some plants up it and she said no go ahead, i would just say you'd like to grow some climbers and do they mind you putting up some trellis, it'll be nice for them too as they will also be able to see the flowers!!

I would just like to say I agree with all of the above!! :-) Post some pictures when you have done it!

Hi Jennie!! It's only me!!! Yep, I agree with all the above too!! I'm sure the neighbour will be only too pleased!!

Another climber for shade is the Pyranthia, I've got the firesomething one! I bought it with wildlife in mind. It does have thorns mind, but it is evergreen, has white flowers in the summer I think and red berries in the autumn.

Happy hunting!

I fully understand your feelings,I also have great neighbours but also like quiet me times I,m sure as has already been said that you"ll find they wont be offended, but will be pleased if you mention your plans, also the beauty of trellis is the fact they will get to share your blooms and might even have some suggestions of their own..........

They'd benefit from the flowers aswell so I don't see what they could complain about.
Welcome to GoY aswell.

Speak to the neighbours. They are the only ones who can answere you.

I would talk to the neighbours. If they are nice and you are on good terms I'm sure that if you explain that you want to grow climbers they will be fine with it.
Welcome to GOY

Welcome to GoY,Mookins.
You know, chatting about the trellis could be the beginning of a really neighbourly friendship. Do let us know how you get on.

As bless.
I will try but somehow I don't think it is going to work. :-(

Oh Mookins! You failed in your mission! Now come on - go and see them, and let us know how you got on THIS time!

I should think they will be pleased to think you consult them and also that you put up some trellis with plants on rather than an ugly bare fence without saying anything! Fences certainly can cause bad feeling but I wouldn't think a few lengths of trellis would! Good luck!
