My garden in June

What a month this has been – cold, wet and windy! But we’ve had two sunny days in a row, so I took some photos today. It felt such a treat to be out in the garden again, and wearing the old sunhat!

Just two days ago, it was decidedly chilly – even this regular visitor was fed up :

But for two days now, it has been mainly sunny, and the plants have visibly cheered up!

The herb bed is looking very lush – all the rain has certainly produced plenty of green; the Melissa will be getting the chop soon as it is overshadowing several other plants:

The containers are beginning to put on growth now and starting to provide some colour. A lot of them are definitely what Monty referred to as a “mish-mash”, but that’s how I like them!

The barrel had to be refilled this year, so I don’t expect it to clear properly until after next Spring. It is certainly full:

Some of the lobelias in these pots have still to flower, but I am pleased with the general effect:

Oh dear! Something (guess what!) is definitely getting at the runner beans. I am starting off some more in small pots, and shan’t put them out until they are good and sturdy – this often happens! I grow the beans mainly for decorative effect, and to shade the front of the greenhouse, then I get a few tasty helpings into the bargain :

Mum gave me some poppy seeds last year, and I sprinkled them in the border! They have appeared all over the place! But I don’t mind – if they have chosen a really inconvenient home, I shall just pull them up :

Campanula (poscharskyana?) grows all over the garden like a weed, but how can I pull it up when it produces a display like this? :

Down in the wild area the ferns appear to have appreciated the rain :

It looks as if Sarah Bernhardt is about to step out of the wings and take centre stage. She’s always worth waiting for! :

Fingers crossed for some decent weather so that I can enjoy some time sitting out – if the Fatsia Japonica will give me some room, that is!

Everything in your garden is lovely and miles ahead of mine. But we've had some sun, too - at last.

Thanks Sticki, Scottish and Ojibway. Although we seem to have had unpleasant weather for ages, in fact I know that we have got off very lightly compared to a lot of the country so I really can't grumble. But I so miss the sun when it's dull!

It looks really pretty Mel. I'm way behind as I haven't even made my baskets up yet. Not enough hours in the day! All your pics. are lovely and I especially like the peony.

I love your garden, it is full of interest such as the planting in the steps and those lovely Ferns

Some really nice photos of your garden there ... everything seems to be doing well with you.
I like mishmash too lol It's more interesting I think.

Thanks Drc - the planting on the steps I cannot take much credit for, except allowing it to be there! (I have scraped it all away at least twice this year - not because I don't like it, but because I have visions of not being able to use the steps if I don't!) I am hoping that there will be enough sun to encourage the pelargoniums to flower at last - I so love them. The ferns do really well down at the bottom of the garden, and I have several self-seeded large ferns in the herb bed and around the garden as well.(I think they may be shuttlecock ferns, though I'm not sure - there was one in the corner when we moved here 40 years ago)

Thanks Hywel! Yes a mish-mash is just the job! Most things are doing well this year, though some of the lupins have been badly affected by aphids. I have cut them down on the off-chance that they might flower again. I'm fairly new to lupins, though I have always loved them.

Mish-mashes work for me too. Love the lobelia shot and the dangling thing above. Like everyone else, I'm just longing for the sun to return so that we can all play in our gardens. Yours is looking lovely, though.

Thanks Tuesdaybear - it's a VERY wet and windswept garden at the moment!

You have a lovely garden Mel, is it very large?

25 Jun, 2012

Thank you, Bornagain. No it's not very large - about 65x35 feet. It looks much bigger in the photos, though - the lawn especially. It's in three distinct sections: patio, middle bit with borders and lawn and wild area at the bottom. It's just about the right size for me to keep on top of!

Lovely garden...I love the steps up to your patio doors...it all looks really estabished and welcoming :D

Thanks Karen - it is pretty much established. There are parts that I sometimes think should be started over again, but I'm not very good at that! I tend to change things slowly, and put up with the jungly bits at the backs of the borders!

Yes, I can understand that....there's nothing wrong with a bit of wildness and overgrown areas is there, especially in an old garden. Gives it more atmosphere. I just watched Alan T. on 'Love Your Garden' and there were a couple of 'outdoor rooms' on there with sofas and whitewashed walls etc...not my idea of a garden....I like a bit of ivy and a few deep shady bits where the shrubs and trees have settled down....you can do something with them! Don't get me wrong..I like modern gardens..as long as the plants are really the main event, not the concrete!

Yes - I agree. Sometimes I wonder if people with those gardens actually get enough good weather to enjoy them! They do look very smart, though, and it is good that people have the garden they want - I like an old rambling garden myself, and I do like a bit of shade. There is so much to be said for trees and height, in my book. But each to his own, and occasionally I wonder what it might be like to have a modern garden. I'm probably not nearly tidy enough to maintain one, though! (For "probably" read "definitely"!)

lol...me too...on all counts! :D
