Happy days!
I went into the oft mentioned “Very Expensive Garden Centre” today thinking that I would see if they had any interesting Tricyrtis (is it just me, or are they really very thin on the ground this year?) to add to the collection. In a word, no. Not a single Toad Lily anywhere.

What they did have though, was a sale on. Even that was looking very uninspiring until I found the last sale area. This is where the fun began. Everything was three quid! So after fifteen minutes faffing around I left with (open the underlined text in a new tab to see photos of what they will look like)………..

A Bletilla striata with lots of baby bulbs (reduced from £6.50)

A Clianthus puniceus Kaka King which stands over a metre and a half tall (reduced from £15)

And a Clianthus puniceus White Heron which was as tall until I broke the top half a metre off carrying them to the checkout (again reduced from £15)!

Happy days!

31 Aug, 2011

I lack the vision Lulu!

Thanks Sticki - the Clianthus are New Zealand plants that Lulu may remember........

Thanks Sheila!

31 Aug, 2011

Oh New Zealand...........just the most stunning country!

31 Aug, 2011

that's a bargain for the B.Striata i have several well worth it... clianthus sounds good too.. nice one.

31 Aug, 2011

I also have a Metrosideros (Southern Rata) Lulu - I'm hoping that it'll be large enough to bloom in the next year or two.
I'd return there tomorrow if Sue would.........

31 Aug, 2011

Thanks SL - I may have a few Bletilla next year too if I'm lucky!
Nice two as far as the Clianthus goes!!!!!!!

31 Aug, 2011

flying through all that turbulence again meanie?? i havent forgotten that!!!

31 Aug, 2011

Then you would be too far away to ever meet up with Meanie (but I know what you mean) As long as my folks are alive.............and also it's very, very hard to get me on a plane and it's a jolly long boat ride!

31 Aug, 2011

I prefer turbulence to spewing my guts up over the side of a boat!!!!!!!!!
It's only 24hrs on a plane Lulu!

31 Aug, 2011

good thing i have finished my tea meanie!!!!

31 Aug, 2011

Happy days indeed, lost my Clianthus in the winter but have some seedlings from it growing now hope they survive this winter!

31 Aug, 2011

Yes but have you been on a plane with a mega bomb scare? Have crossed the atlantic on a boat, the only thing we really had to worry about was bumping into a whale!

31 Aug, 2011

I was going to pot them up and stick them in an unheated greenhouse for the winter.......
Do they strike easily from cuttings would you know?

31 Aug, 2011

Lulu - I flew out of New York a few hours after the Japanese 747 went down..........

31 Aug, 2011

now i shall be having nightmares!!

31 Aug, 2011

They do strike from cuttings, not too difficult compared to some plants!

31 Aug, 2011

Oh what lovely bargains well done you!

31 Aug, 2011

Thanks for that PA! I may get two for three quid if it takes.

It was a bit of a result Homebird and Nana d!

Up early Meanie!

1 Sep, 2011

I'm always up at this time!
More to the point, what is a lady of leisure doing up at this time!!

Sticki - I've just done a blog showing how to do the "link thingy" for you.

1 Sep, 2011

2 hrs kip last night! I have decided that 'Calms' don't work!!
It was quite cold this morning, certainly a nip in the air.

1 Sep, 2011

What are "calms"?

1 Sep, 2011

Herbal sleep remedy!

1 Sep, 2011

How herbal!! I remember how the "Maui Wowee" used to knock me out!

1 Sep, 2011

Now it's my turn, what's a 'Maui Wowee?
Calms or is it Kalms? is valerian, hopp based.
Tried 'rescue remedy night' also. Work once then never again!
Tried alcohol, def doesn't work.
Tried working 12 hour days....doesn't work either!!

1 Sep, 2011

It was a New Zealand smoking herb!!!!!!!!

1 Sep, 2011

Oh I know the one, sleep very well. I did the bungee jump in Queenstown only to find the blokes who tied me up smoked it too!!

1 Sep, 2011

I think tied is a bit of a loose description for a bit of rope and an old towel!!!!!!

1 Sep, 2011

Now you tell me! The boys said I should be safe enough but if the bungee broke and I survived the dive the rapids round the corner would finish me off!

1 Sep, 2011

Probably the same rapids that our jet boat driver aimed at!!!

1 Sep, 2011

I used to fancy the jet boat driver!

2 Sep, 2011

He didn't do it for me!!!!!!!

2 Sep, 2011

Nor me, he was married! I remember he had a bad back from driving jetboats on the Shotover river.

2 Sep, 2011

Great bargains Meanie! Loved the first one, reminds me a bit of a pleone. The others are totally outrageous..you have so many wacky plants you will have to get a big fancy glasshouse and open to the public...mini Kew Glass House.

Went to NZ in 2007 and did 3 (not too) dangerous things...took a helicopter ride over Rotarua, took a boat thru caves looking at glow worms and watched carefully as a really ancient bloke reversed close to our car! (He hit the bank thankfully, not us).
Didnt see anyone fanciable Lulu..
BTw, before bed I take 2 Solpadol 30/500 plus a glass of wine..really works a treat Lulu

28 Oct, 2011

They certainly were Tet - you were there three weeks too early!

The glass houses are work in progress......

28 Oct, 2011

LoL Tet, my Doc looked on in horror when I mentioned Solpadol and wine! Rather a good mix I thought at the time as I actually went to sleep!

29 Oct, 2011

Well I dont have it every night, but when you find yourself dropping off in the middle of lunch, desperate measures....

29 Oct, 2011

You should try this toothache ladies! I'm a bit of an insomniac at the best of times, but this is mental - 50mg codiene hardly dulls it. Only another week before the tooth can come out..........

29 Oct, 2011

I can see Sue has got her work cut out! lol!
Seriously, sorry to hear about that Meanie, really bad toothache is not funny!

29 Oct, 2011

Not at all, especially when a cold has started up too. Not good.......

The tooth should have been out by now, but the hospital put the appointment back three times. I'm going private next week - it could be up to £700.

29 Oct, 2011

£700??? I think I might give string around the doorknob a go first!!!

29 Oct, 2011

The only string involved will be to sew the gum back up after they cut it open!!

29 Oct, 2011

Poor man. That tooth sounds like a root only which has been covered over and healed and now has an abcess in it. Are you on antibiotics?

31 Oct, 2011

Truth be told Scotsgran I'm terrified of hypodermics! I broke the tooth a few weeks ago jumping off the shed roof. I am on antibiotics, and hopefully it should be ok to come out on Friday.........

31 Oct, 2011

I was terrified of dentists until I met the man who has just retired. I do sympathise but dentists are trained to deal with people like us nowadays. I used to sit in the chair tears running down my face and visibly shaking.Bless him he was so patient. By the time he retired after looking after my teeth for about thirty years i could sit and have a filling without needing an injection. At one time i was there every week for a year because I was having so many problems, so find someone good and stick to them. My dentist sold the practise to someone just like himself. Their mantra is if it can be saved save it. I would not have any of my own teeth left if he had done what i wanted and sent me to hispital to have them all removed under an anaesthetic. As it is my teeth are not beautiful but are my own or crowns. You are too young to be beaten by a man with a hypodermic. You might even be able to get hypnosis if you are unable to cope. Good luck on Friday.

1 Nov, 2011

Meanie, I feel for you, toothache is akin to having kidney stones with the pain. Not only having to deal with the tooth but also the bill.

1 Nov, 2011

Steragram - apparently on the whole I'm blessed with very strong teeth. This one is very unfortunate though and every time you grab it with the pliers it just breaks - I know as I tried one night!

Lulu - I've broken many bones (including on of the vertebrae in my neck), but this is far worse! The only thing that came close is when I had a lumbar puncture which got infected.........

1 Nov, 2011

Good lord, not nice Meanie.

1 Nov, 2011

I'm feeling pretty murderous Lulu!
