In praise of Plumbago

This year I’ve grown Plumbago (capensis) for the first time, and to say that I’m pleased with them is an understatement!
I’ve always liked this plant and finally got some seeds over the Christmas break. Sown in January and in bloom by August!
Now that I have my own plants I like it even more – the clusters of simple flowers in the most perfect shade of sky blue are maybe as perfect as it gets.

I’ve kept two plants for myself, keeping one in the conservatory and one outdoors. The extra heat of the conservatory means that this one is a month or so ahead of the poor outdoor plant.
So as well as being easy to grow, it’s also pest free! How much better can it get – still need convincing?

So beautiful and that shade of blue is sublime. One was in the boss's greenhouse but the heating didn't work so it died.
Hope to get the heating working properly this winter to aid my salvias!!

We used to have this in our garden in Gran Canaria. It is a most beautiful blue and a real sun lover. It grew as a bush in the corner of the garden and we would get Monarch Butterflies on it. Lovely

No conservatory - buy seeds and grow outdoors in the summer. If you have a greenhouse, let them take their chances in there for the winter........

Is it possible to grow these indoors? I have one room that has a big window, although very little direct sun, it's not a particularly warm room but I wondered if it was worth trying??

Finally, read your blog and saw your photos on Plumbago. You pictures are really good. Very clear and precise. Nice work Meanie and nice flowers. I always like them and this is the color I like most of all not those other blues. Thank you.

In case you didn't know, it flowers on new wood. Every January I prune mine back - I have 4 in blue and 2 white.

Mine is pruned back already as I have "space issues"!
