many thank’s everyboby, I’ve taken on board all you’ve said. much appreciated.My garden is new to me, so I don’t know about the acidity of the soil yet.

Although lilacs are said to prefer alkaline soils, I have two growing quite happily on acid. They are pretty tolerant

You know you can buy a very cheap soil testing kit to check for alkaline/acidity, don't you? I think that B&Q have them, so do Garden Centres.
