Plant Exchange

This is the web address of the plant exchange. I came across it at The Shrewsbury Flower Show, there was someone on a stall there giving out information. I’ve just joined, but don’t know much about it yet.
Apparently it’s for buying and selling surplus plants between gardeners – Saves throwing out surplus plants, and saves others from having to pay full price at a garden centre.
Sounds a good idea, depends how well it works!

i initially found this, too, Mark, at the Gardening Scotland show back in June. I was in the audience of a BBC live gardening radio show, and one of the founders was interviewed. It is a good idea for plant xchange, to get rid of surplus plants for free, for an income, or to raise funds for a charity (less the postage, of course). There is, however, an annual subscription fee involved - just to let you know.

So i've discovered, thanks for your comment.

this would be something the members of this site could do between themselves without the need to join an outside organisation. think it would be a good idea

A Seed Exchange has for some time existed here on GOY, Islander. Just click on the "Plants" tab to see it. Quite a few members have used it.

Maybe the seed exchange could develop into a plant exchange. I have received a cutting from one kind GOY member.

I have also received/sent plants in the past, Mark. It's actually good fun, and helpful, too, isn't it?

I agree, David. I must admit i would be reluctant to include the expensive named Begonias as they are so expensive to replace and cuttings are to keep up the stock for display and showing. But generally, with most plants, it's a great idea.

Well, Mark, I wouldn't contemplate sending expensive/rare plants for free , never mind the stress of hoping they got there and survived). But, I had a couple of GOY members ask me how to grow some common perennials from seed and I just said "Forget that - have some of mine, you'll have the flowers this year, not in 3 years' time". It has also worked for me in reverse (my "Munchkin" hostas, for example).

I'm sure most would say the same. But it sounds as if you have passed on some good plants. I know i received a good cutting not long ago. Brilliant.
