Posted on 15 Mar, 2008 14 comments

Due to the slug invastion in my garden last year, which distroyed many of my precious plants, i have decided to resort to drastic measures!

and now the battle will begin! no more plant casualties in my garden, just slug massacre! HAHAHAHAHA! (evil laughter!) – desipte having a bad back i have ventured out there this morning to declare war! this is the first of 3 platoons! lol the other two will be deployed at 6 week intervals! so i will keep you updated on how the war progresses! – have never used this before – but the slug problem in my garden is really bad, so we will see how the little devils hold out against my latest cunning plan! HAHAHAHA! (more evil laughter!) lol

Good luck with this - we tried it a couple of years ago - not sure if it worked or not - but then being colder up here we maybe applied it too early. So, I definitely want to know if it works for you....

yes it was'nt cheap Carolyn, i bought a course of 3 treatments for just under £30 each will be sent at 6 week intervals - but according to gardeners world it is the best on the market - so we will see if it is as good as they say! did you buy a course for £20 Carolyn or was that just one packet? and Buzzbee - i live just outside of London, we have'nt really had a winter here at all and the weather has been perfect for slugs, mild and wet! apparently it takes a week to start working and then lasts for 6 weeks when i should recieve the next one to apply straight away. i will of course keep you all posted, i have lots of slug favorites in my garden so it will be easy to tell if it is working or not!

You need to find a Mr.Toad...Majeeka. Find a toadhouse and Call it ToadHall... I have a Mr.Toad who turned out to be a Mrs. Toad...and sang all night in my pond...ahhmee.
What we don't put up with just to be rid of a few slugs...lol

good idea Lori, but i do not have a pond, and the amount of slugs i have in my garden i would need a 'toad city' don't think 'toad hall' would quite cut it lol! i do get a couple of frogs visiting the garden and a headhog, which is why i have opted for the bio control, it is suposed to be completely safe for these little friends!

Hi Angie...did you know that slugs don't cross copper?

a copper edging on a bed will turn them around!

same for a container or planter... I really sympathise...I've had a garden or two devoured overnight. Oh, toads don't need a pond, the one I had thought she was at club med.. trilled all night long...thankfully it was like living near a railway track, you don't hear it after awhile!!lol. She laid her eggs in strings in my pond and the goldfish were delighted. They are pretty shy otherwise...
Have you tried diatomaceous earth? The other alternative is a midnight safari... with flashlights (torches), gloves and big pails of soapy water...pick 'em and plunk 'em. True adventure in gardening...lol... Good Luck.

lol hi Lori, yes i did know but there are so many plants that they like in my garden that i would end up with more copper than soil! and i used to have a pond that a family of toads lived in, we had a lady toad with bright pink bloches - yes a pink toad! and she laid eggs in the pond, but we had so much of it that we had to remove some of it to the local park where there was a bigger pond! but i do like frogs and toads and they are very welcome in my garden maybe i will invest in a toad house! and the bio control seems to be working by the way!

You do realise it's unlawful to transport frogspawn/toad eggs from one location to another? There are froggy diseases that can be transmitted this way. If I remember correctly it is only frogs the red leg disease affects but the movement of toad eggs still remains covered by this law. Be careful!!

We use copper tape to protect our dahlias from slugs and it seems pretty effective - but it is hugely expensive and we certainly couldn't afford to use it to protect all our susceptible plants - I'm at a point of wondering if the thing to do is to grow more of the plants than I actually want and accept I'll lose a few to slugs but hope that those that survive will eb extra strong. Anyone else tried that approach?

oh yes buzzbee but i ended up with no plants at all - i really do have millions of the buggers, hopefully the all out warfare approach will work for me - so far so good, they have had a go at 2 of my clematis but appart from that most things are untouched at the moment, but the sudden burst of cold weather might effect my army! so hopefully the reinforcements will arrive soon! lol

My father gave me a bag of soot and said that stops them, have you heard of that before ? I will see. That was good price by the way 3 for £30, the one I saw was £20 each.
