Greenhouse Gardening..... Where do I start!!!!

Literally, where do I start? Been up today with mini me to look round my adopted greenhouse, it’s relatively clean, has weed membrane on the floor, some improvised timber standings resting on bricks, and that’s it….. No shelving at all as was only used for tomatoes before. Going to cadge together some shelves…. See what I can scavenge/up cycle ….. Spotted an abandoned bookcase, am thinking I shall acquire that? Ive just started some soft wood cuttings that I will move along, but what if anything can I sow, in addition to pansys, what’s going on in your greenhouses just now? What are you all propagating and what tips can you share, like window and door, window always open except in rain? It’s in a south west facing garden and shaded by 2 big playhouses in the garden behind in the evening and shaded by house earlier in day….. No idea what to do!!!!!!Thiught would post this as a blog even though it’s more of a question, any previous blogs you have written or read in this you could direct me to much appreciated :)

Hi M! Do you have more hours in the day than the rest of us?? LOL :-D There seems to be no end to the projects you are prepared to tackle and I feel tired just reading your blogs - but always very stimulating and entertaining. I have a little plastic greenhouse that comes out in the spring to help with my seeds/hardening off plants but I do have proper greenhouse envy (except for the maintenance bit!!) Jx

Making the most of the light nights and dry spells, would much rather be out than in house.... Hate housework and all things domestic! Except cooking but that tends to involve mess making which I do enjoy :) It's going to take a long time to complete but I like to plan, and enjoying bouncing ideas off you all and storing away wee nuggets of information :) ....., excuse my keen-ness, can't help myself :D

I know what you mean but I chickened out tonight and stayed in away from the blasted midges!! :-(

You could get some Tomato Plants and set up in Grow Bags. That would be easy and use the space.

As Diane says there are still toms., peppers etc.potted up and fore sale in some gc's and nurseriesx, its been such a poor year everything is behind.
I have a gh that is very old up near the house and I put ornamentals in so it looks pretty, last year the buzy lizzies in thetre didn't get the virus, I,ve some calla lilies, some nerines which will flower in the autumn and some double petunia in clay pots, also pelargoniums and begonias would look nice.....they all seem to do much better than in the garden as they don't get soaked and battered!
Both gh have the windows open all the time and even in the winter on open a tiny bit to keep the air moving ( unless really cold)
I open the doors most days but it depends on the weather in this summer of gales from the east with. Sheeting down rain I left windows open and doors shut!

A good gh book from the library is fun and you can see what interests you, soon be time foir semiripe cuttings although you could try some geranium etc.

Have a play see what like to grow in there......and have fun!

Good luck with your new greenhouse. At this time of year I always sew things for next year (nothing like looking ahead lol)
Wallflowers, Bellis, Canterbury Bells, and I'm going to sew perennial rockery pinks. They're very pretty. And more Lupins and Scabious. They're perrenial too, and if you sew them now they'll flower next spring :o)

Brill thanks for the feedback, sowing now for Spring is what I want to focus on, that and cuttings, so that I can fill the ground once Ive turned it all over:)

My greenhouse is shaded for a good part of the day in summer, so can't grow tomatoes, but I do the same as Hywel and sow biennial seeds and some perennials, and take a few cuttings from shrubs.

Sweet peas can be sown in the autumn too if you like them, I enjoy trying to get things like tree and shrubs seeds to germinate and they often need a spell of cold (have sometimes resorted to putting them in the fridge....)

I am so Jealous Magna, how lovely is that, I wish I could have a greenhouse, I think I would set up residence in it lol. Ooh Good Luck and many happy hours just pottering away, keep us updated on your progress, I cant wait to see what you plant. x

You really need some staging, and a potting tray.

To make best use of a greenhouse you need electricity.
Having a socket or two in there would be my priority.

Lol at Marion's comment about setting up residence in it - I often just sit in my greenhouse when I want to be sitting outside but it's too cold/windy. That might not be quite so easy if it's in someone else's garden though ;o)

I've got a greenhouse for the first time this year and haven't done much in it yet, I have a few small tomato plants that were given to me by my neighbour, and a grapevine which I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to tame as I hadn't trained/pruned it at the right time (well I had just moved house...) and there weren't proper supports in place for it to grow onto. Apart from that it's just my container plants drying out after too much rain.... But I do like Hywel's suggestion of sowing things now for next spring, I might give that a go too now I can get in there without being tripped over or hit on the head or attached to by the vine lol :o)

I've got a couple of pallets to attempt making staging from...,, this will be interesting! I adore sweet peas so they are on the list of seeds, I'm worried about my cuttings ive "aquired" keep thinking I've cut them wrong, but I'm sure I have followed instructions and diagrams I've read/seen, well whatever I'm doing be it right or wrong I'm Havin fun, and so is mini me...... She's soooo fussy with eating veg ( hubby and I eat plenty so not sure why she is so averse.... She used to eat anything) but couldn't wait to taste her very own cress ...... Her radish here bolted but she's got others and carrot at grandads ....So .added bonus is my child learning the food and growing cycle and wanting to enjoy tasting new things :) x All while I indulge my guilt pleasure..... For those wondering, I'm 32 x

Hi M. Apparently a lot of children go through a stage where vegetables taste bitter (seems to coincide with saying No or More a lot :-D). My nephew is eating fruit like it's going out of fashion so no worries about his 5 a day. My mum used to mash up carrot and turnip in with the tatties, still like it now! Sounds like she has enough variety anyway with the cress and the carrots and you'll probably find that as you have good eating habits mini m will also adopt them :-) Nightie night.

Night Julie, mini me adores fruit..... Just worry about the natural sugars lol.... She gags with most veg now, but used to eat puréed anything and moved on to veg finger foods fine before she hit this stage:.:::: thankfully she still eats veg soup lol, and I make a mean soup :) x

Semiripe cuttins for me are the easiest, thats not the soft wood at the growing tip or the hard stiff wood but the bit inbetween.

27 Jun, 2012

I like taking semiripe cuttings, not the soft growing tip or the hard wood but the bit in between, have you looked a Goys cuttings pages, pick C of the alphabet below then choose cuttings.....have fun sounds as if you are doung really well, as a child I would only eat cabbage with tomato ketchup.....but I love it now....

Maggie, gardening is always a bit hit and miss, we have successes and we have failures, but we learn as we go along,
you will have lots of enjoyment from this GH,
if it has electricity you can overwinter stuff and bring plants on quicker
Any questions, just ask away x

Ewww Pam, cabbage & ketchup lol,

my dear old mum always overcooked veg, cabbage was always mashed with butter, i still like it like that, the OH thinks im barking and I have to remove his from the pan after a few mins, then carry on cooking mine!
