Help the bees- and baffle the neighbours!

With the ever increasing problems facing the bee (and insect) population, I decided to leave three sections of my grassed area – definitely not lawn – at the front of our bungalow unmown.
It is a small attempt at a wildlife area within a normal urban front garden. Mostly daisies, buttercup and clover, but the bees love it!
I have had some strange looks cast my way when out with the mower. One gent actually walked past shaking his head and then came back for another look and commented; “do you know that you’ve missed some bits?”

Some people just don’t get it, do they?

Hahha, I can imagine his bewilderment and your amusement :) It is such a nice idea.
I saw the same idea implemented in another garden here. http://www.growsonyou.com/stroller/blog/23809-ideas-for-a-front-garden.

It's actually my garden that Stroller commented on!

Great idea, and I love the idea of baffling the neighbours!

Ahh, Lutleyyeltz, that explains it. I thought it was such a coincidence :)

I leave the edges in the back garden like this, with dock, buttercup and daisies mainly and nettles at the back of the shade border- not sure where the clover's gone, but hadn't thought of doing the same at the front. Hm, pause for thought...

I hadn't a choice - I've no grass in the back garden!
Anyway it's quite amusing watching passers-by do a "double take!"

I like what you've done. Some people are just too tidy. They've just been 'tidying' the hedgerow at the back of my garden and sliced away all the wild flowers. I've sent in a complaint ...

I like it, it looks really good and your helping the wildlife at the same time ~ win-win! :-)

I leave a patch round a flowering cherry tree, and have had comments, (including one from a Yorkshire In Bloom judge when I entered in the Leeds in Bloom competition last year) ..that the garden needed weeding!

Regarding judges of "In Bloom" competitions. A couple of years ago Sarah Raven had a campaign to encourage local councils to leave a few wild areas and use plants beneficial to pollenating insects in their parks and gardens.
The flak that she got from Harrogate and their traditional idea of bedding plants and even more bedding plants was unbelievable.
She did, however, manage to convince Birmingham Council to plant runner beans amongst their more traditional displays.
Even in rural areas there was a reluctance by parish councils to leave patches unmown on their village greens. "It looks so untidy" was the regular comment. They would soon be complaining when bees totally disappear!

Rant over!

A gentleman in what is considered one of our towns upmarket areas had a beautiful bank outside his house full of wild flowers, the majority of people were admiring it and praising him for his efforts, it really was a treat to see and it was photographed in the local paper, then some bright spark complained to the local council and he was issued with an order to cut the bank as it lowered the tone of the area, hows that for a conservation town.....
