New Year Resolutions

Do you make them ?

My resolution is to take it a bit easier on the heavy work !

I have serious problems with my neck and shoulders and the heavy stuff like digging deep holes in the rocky, stoney soil here kills me and it lays me up for a good 7-10 days and renders me bed-bound in severe pain, but because i ‘have’ the strength … i do it :-/
Silly i know, but it’s not always possible to wait for the OH to do it for me, plus with every feeble dig of the spade there’d be major moaning about it !

(The ground there is so bad that with every dig of the spade or trowel comes a clunk where i come up against stones and rocks, it’s your worst nightmare and had i known what was under here i’d have got a mini digger and dug over the entire garden in the very beginning, hey ho ).

My plan (for the moment!) is getting the 3 shrubs i’ve recently bought into the ground !

This one – Pittosporum tenuifolium Purpureum, i’ve today put in the above stoney ground (see the jungle behind !)

Loropetalum …. going in the front

Photinia Pink Marble … going in the back

So in the coming months, when you hear me talk about the digging or planting i intend doing, please gently remind me of my New Year resolution
;-))
Happy New Year !

The only New yr resolution I have kept is the one I made some years ago - it was never to make any more New yrs resolutions.
I am glad never to make any more because I always felt guilty about not keeping them. It's such a relief now without them

I am the same way... Working in the gardens and the yard gets harder with each passing year, but I keep pushing myself because Mother Nature has rewarded me with beauty that I have never seen before every growing season.
For me, a plant is a helpless life-form that cannot move and depends entirely on ME to give it the soil and environment that it needs to survive and thrive.
Like my cats, all of my plants are like my "pets" and each and every one receives the very best organic growing conditions possible.
It sure has paid off! {grin}

I'm with you Hywel - I never make resolutions, mainly because there's nothing I do that I want to stop doing, and nothing I can think of that I never did but want to start doing! Life is good! I embrace it with happiness every day and it rewards me by bringing more happiness. I wish happiness for everyone - with or without resolutions.

Mine is to start writing in my Gardeners' log again - I did it faithfully for two years and then stopped due to family problems - but it's so useful that I want to restart.

Shame that there will be a whole year's gap - but maybe I didn't set foot in the garden during the whole of 2009???? LOL.

Maybe ;-))
Something more enjoyable maybe ?
Never !!!

I don't make resolutions, but we'll make sure you stick to yours Louise Lol. Unfortunately, it looks like I may not be doing much heavy gardening in the next year either(which is a problem as it's my job as you know) I've not been able to do much for some months and now I have benn diagnosed as having Fibro Myalgia which makes me very tired and weak(and achy) so I can emphathise with your neck and shoulder problems, Louise. It makes things like digging, very difficult, doesn't it?

28 Dec, 2009

Oh doesn't it just Paul :-(((((((
Your job and Fibro Myalgia aren't good partners :-/

Although my health problems are minor ( partial sight and arthritis in my hands) it has changed my gardening ways, but I love a challenge. I will only ask my lads for help with the heavy lifting. Louise1 I dont make resolutions as I would not keep them.

Louise~ My (yearly) New Years' resolution always involves losing weight, and last year, both hubbie and I did just that. He lost about 45 pounds and I lost about 24. I also have back problems and neck/disc problems, and I think losing even that little helped me tremendously come spring when I tackled every square inch of my huge yard to improve it. I created beds on all four sides of my house, dug out the sod and took it to composting site in my neighborhood, added compost back into the new beds and tilled it into the clay soil already there, hauled in truck loads of compost to add to beds at far back of my property I created last year, planted many shrubs, roses, clematis, every day perennials, some annuals, and then mulched the whole lot! That energy comes from my gardening addiction and lots of coffee! lol Now that Christmas is over, the snacks and goodies will be gone (or given away) and back onto the straight and narrow for both of us. The treadmill in the basement will get used once again, as Santa has brought me a new "jogging" type outfit suited perfectly for the treadmill or walking the neighborhood in nicer weather. My back and neck still bother me a bit when I am gardening, but I pace myself, have hubbie help with really heavy items, and take an Advil after meals for pain relief. I hope your 2010 is better than 2009 and I will try to remind you (and myself) not to overdo the heavy stuff in the garden! Lisa :]

Mavis, a lot of people are saying the same as you .... don't make them !

28 Dec, 2009

Hi Lisa :-)
Well done you and hubby, aren't you both good :-))
It's obviously helped a lot with your increased energy and allowed you to really get on with your garden.
I'm itching to get out there and get going .... only trouble here is the cold, and we've got snow forecast for later in the week too, boo hoo :-(

(I don't like the ice and snow because it affects my job so badly.... driving a lot)

28 Dec, 2009

I'm with Hywel aswell on this dont make any then i can't brake any of them....

28 Dec, 2009

Are you telling us that you're both so good all the time that you don't need to make any? LOL.....Now do I believe that? ;-)))

28 Dec, 2009

Barbara i could do with making a few, but then the hardest bit is keeping them, so dont bother making them in first place :o)))

28 Dec, 2009

I know Louise1 I am twitching to get back out in the garden there is so much I want to get done but until the weather eases theres no chance.
