Finches Feeding Time !

I have a Rowan tree in the front of my garden and i hang up to 8 seed feeders from it, with sunflower hearts in them.

The regulars are all the small songbirds – tits (except longtailed), goldfinches, greenfinches, chaffinches and linnets here and in the winter there are Blackcaps too.

The adults have been bringing their young ones here through the year which has been beautiful to watch – and hear !!!!
The young flutter their little wings like a small humming bird while the adult regurgitates its food for the youngster.

This morning though i saw something that fascinated me – one of the goldfinches was feeding a young greenfinch …… are these little birds so closely related that this is normal and common practice ?
I didn’t think that this would be a natural instinct but it is for some, clearly !

Here are two pictures taken at the beginning of January, the pictures get shrunk down on this site so it makes seeing detail very difficult but you can see some of the feeders used back then and with a magnifying glass see some birds in flight and some feeding ;-)

Louise1... I had my first goldfinches this summer they are gorgeous little birds,I now have started to put white sunflower hearts out for them and it is bringing all the smaller birds into my garden and to my feeders. They are lovely to watch I am after some new feeders one of them is going to be for niger seed.

The pics are great Louise ... how lovely to have such a community of birds. Maybe the finches are considered as relations no matter what the prefix!

Awww, Mavis, i'm 'so' pleased :-))))
It works every time ! Give them sunflower 'hearts' and not the ones with husks on and they flock to them :-)))))

Fluff, i'd not seen i before but maybe you're right - perhaps it's a 'sharing' community amongst finches.

Aha.....I hadn't spotted the blackbird!!!....doh.......

It'd be nice to think so Louise ... altho' you rarely hear of one type of bird feeding another's young maybe they all do.

Amazing, isn't it !
It's a feeding frenzy over there at times so maybe 'one' simply forgot who the 'other' was !!!!!

You have inspired me Louise. I am going to get some sunflower hearts and hang some feeders in my Rowan trees! Lovely blog...strange behaviour, but who knows what they get up to...we actually know so little about garden animals, I find the birds fascinating in the winter. Gives the garden a whole extra dimension when you feed them.

I'm looking forward to hearing about it Karen :-)))))

You can buy specific seed feeders and that's the best kind to put the hearts into - also ...... because you want to attract clinging birds and not ground feeders that 'can't/don't' cling.you need this kind of feeder.
Flat feeders that any small bird can hop 'into' means you could get larger birds like blackbirds and robins ..... and you remember me telling you about that horrid robin here :-( He chased every finch away :-(
These days i give him his own flat dish (in his OWN area) and the clingers have their seed feeders with perches, to cling onto :-)
Win-win :-))))

Nice bird control Louise!! lol x

louise are you sure its a greenfinch cause goldfinch young are more grey and yellow strip in tail, greenfinch is pale green with yellow strip in wing and tail, lucky you having them in your garden though

Quite sure San :-))

There are large flocks of green and gold finches here and they've both brought their young - they're easy to identify when you know your birds.

At the minute Louise1 I have just a couple of feeders The new ones I want are bit different being those bonny coloured recycled plastic ones ,they are ideal for the clingers.I now buy my seed loose at a well known pet shop and find this much cheaper.Nothing I like better than having a cuppa and watching the birds.

Mavis, the two green ones you see in the left of the pictures are the ones to go for.
They're marketed as 'Flip Top feeders' and these allow the birds to get into the seeds easily whilst on those perches.
Pouring the seeds in, aswell as cleaning is very easy with them, certainly the best i've found on the market,
They're only about £2.99.
