A Drones Eye View Of The Garden

Well, actually it is a view from the second floor of the house more of a birds eye view. I wanted to get a picture of one one my three shade gardens featuring Hosta and Honey Suckle and as you can see I don’t have too much of a problem with slugs.

also, in these springtime photos one can see coming up zebra grass, bee balm, a favorite of the hummers, shasta daisy, what I like to call dutchman britches, black eyed susans, clematis..etc.

While getting ready to take another photo a blue blur caught my eye…

A bluebird couple had arrived to look over one of my nesting boxes….

In the above photo you see the male looking into the nest with the female on top. Now, the ritual for nest acceptance is as follows…first, the male places a token twig into the box, I took a photo of this and I slipped with the camera so that was a complete blur. Next, the male stands off away from the nest and starts to sing and flap his closed wings to try to coax the female into the nest…

The female popped into the box and nest building started. At the present time the female is sitting on her eggs in the box and the male from time to time arrives at the hole to look in and feed her. At one time in the USA bluebirds were as numerous as our red breasted robins but with urbanization and loss of nesting sites their numbers dropped greatly. Happy to say though a great project has been underway now to provide these birds with nesting boxes and their numbers have sharply increased!

Thank you all for your comments. What I will show you now
is is a photo taken today of the area that was shown in the first photo in this blog. As you can see, the Honeysuckle growing at the top of the fence has now exploded with flowers and scent….

I will now include some photos of last years Bluebirds..

and to top it all off I’ll throw in a few fairies….

There's a reason they call them the Bluebird of Happiness!
I like to think that the awareness created by conservation societies has helped discourage the indiscriminate use of poisons in our gardens, which has further helped with the insect population resurgence (and hence the food supply of these lovely birds). I'm north of you in Canada and we're seeing fewer robins this year... Once was the time they would waken the neighbourhood with their hollering as soon as the sun came up! We once had purple martins in abundance but have seen a reduction there too... This season we're trying to raise awareness of the need for fostering Asclepias (Milk weed) for the monarch butterflies.
Love your garden and beautiful yard... May you always have the bluebirds of happiness to keep you company.

Yes Lori I have seen changes too. So far I have not seen one hummingbird since my Beebalm flowered and by now I should be seeing thousands of fireflies at night in the trees at the woods margin and up to the present time not one. All the bats are gone due to the white nose syndrome.

I have one little hummingbird who's a bit disappointed with me... I forgot to take down my feeder and it was blown down in a storm and the glass broke... I haven't replaced it yet...but the little guy sits on the wires watching the place where the feeder was. By this time in the season we usually had aerial dogfights with lots of high pitched shreeking. That's a reminder, thankyou. Sorry that you're not seeing them. We still have fireflies but not as many as in previous years. I wonder how much that has to do with neonicotinoids.
Sorry... what is white nose syndrome?

Love the bluebirds, idea of a wooden fence, soft colours, statues for starters.

White nose syndrome is a contagious lethal fungus which has killed over six million bats in North America.

oh dear... bats, birds and bees.

Beyond the wooden fence is a wooded area which is a protected watershed area. The reason for this is an artesian spring in this little forest. I use to go to the small clearing where I used to watch the water bubble up through the fine gravel in the pool but after some tree fall from a storm and due to my age I am no longer able to make a new path to get to probably the most peaceful place that I have ever been to.
