I think we may have identified it... the previous holder used to dig in green manure with mustard seed in it, so thats what it could be....

Thanks very much - off to search now! Will have to check my soil, but could I plant them in the ground within a pot, the plot it very open and I'm worried they may get blown over if they're just standing in a pot...

LOL, he hasn't found any woodlice yet - that could be interesting!!

Thanks that would be great.... I am so new to this!! I have planted a lot of stuff, taking my lead from other plot holders and from the books / sites I've been on... I'm not sure what will grow and what won't but hey - we'll see!! I've planted my potatoes, they had huge sprouts on already! I have earthed them up a lot to keep them warm, so fingers crossed. Although we've had some frost since, they have been quite light ones so hoping they haven't done too much damage!
I need to invest in a cold frame / some cloches for next winter I think, they would be very helpful I think!

We took on an allotment 3 weeks ago, and we have basically just dug it over with a fork and spade. We are lucky though that it wasn't too badly overgrown, just lots of crouch grass, bind weed, docks and dandelions! Our soil is quite light though, not clay based so it hasn't been too bad to dig out...
