dull today

It’s dull today and calm. Yesterday I cut the grass and did some general tidying up. Got a rose thorn stuck in my finger and haven’t been able to shift it so left it alone for now as it’s sore. I shall tie some of the runners on the climbing roses across later today and hope that they don’t bite back again. Plenty of birds back again in the garden. Picked some apples that aren’t supposed to be ready for another 3 – 4 weeks and will get a few more today. Plenty of butterflies around and that means caterpillars too but I try to let nature take it’s course. I’ve seen the wasps flying off with them and the birds take them too. I wonder if we will get a long WInter this year. We haven’t had a good Summer have we, although the flowers have kept their vibrant colours and my lillies have been exceptional with huge flowers. Anyway good gardening everyone and hope you have a good day. Lindak.

I hope your finger is feeling better ! About 6 weeks ago I pruned my rose arch. Very small pretty pink roses. I don't know exactly what they are, because they were here when I bought the house seven years ago.

After the pruning I didn't feel any pricks in my fingers, but the next day - OUCH. Lots of tiny thorns had embedded themselves in my fingers and thumbs. Next time I work on that rose I'll definitely wear gloves ! It took days before my fingers stopped feeling sore.

You mention the summer weather. I think this summer has also had the most WINDY conditions I've ever known. I wonder if these extra windy days are yet another effect of global warming. What do you think, lindak ?

Keep us posted on the injured finger !

Hi Linda, Sorry to hear you've got a thorn in your finger . Hope it will not stop you doing any gardening.

Soak your finger in hot salty water, as hot as you can stand it, for at least 5 minutes. This will soak out any dirt which might have gotten into the finger. Repeat this several times a day. The thorn will work its way up to the surface, but can be painful as long as it is left embedded. When did you last have a tetanus needle? Us gardeners should not forget the risk we run when getting pricked, cut or grazed in the garden, especially using manure. One tablespoon salt in a glass of hot water!

That's very helpful Marguerite.

I'll remember your advice next time the roses attack.

I've used very hot water before, but I've not thought to put salt in.

You might become GoY's resident nurse. LOL

Everyone has given you advice but I just want to add DO NOT ignore it. Years ago when working as a floral designer I ended up hospitalized with blood infection from a rose thorn. It is nothing to ignore!!!!

thanks for the advice I'll try the salty water. The weather just may be an ordinary pattern of events but the ice caps are melting into the sea, the sea is rising so may change the air flows that bring in the wind and rain, so it's possible
that it could the the start of global warming. There are a lot of people on this planet, using it's resources, and creating changes in the atmosphere, with co2 and methane from rubbish tips etc. We are also fishing out the seas. I think that areas of the sea should be established so that each area doesn't get fished for ten years, then move on the next area and so on......so that the ocean bed gets naturally replenished. But there would always be the takers who couldn't care less who spoil it for everyone else. Anyway that's how I think of the planet...that we are all responsible in some small way and should all do something to help....Lindak.
