wet Saturday

My sister and her husband went home last Saturday after a full week of going out to different places. Sherwood forest on Monday. Lunch at Willersley castle then a walk along the Cromford canal Tuesday, Wednesday Bakewell and dropping in at Cauldwells mill. Thursday Critch Tramway Museum, with a couple of rides on the old trams….great!!! Friday Sudbury Hall and the museum of childhood. It was a good week weatherwise as well so we all had a good relaxing week together. I have been catching up in the garden since and have had to cut a lot of plants down that I would normally be cutting back at the beginning of September. We have cabbages that we don’t normally get until Late September October. Have just cut the hebes back they have had a wonderful show of flowers this year. The Lavender is still looking fresh and the roses have decided to have another go at blooming. I shall be twisting the discovery apples to see if they are ready for picking next week as they have started dropping apples. I rescued a hedgehog that was caught in the pea netting and put it in a box with some cat food and water to recover and left the garage door open. Well it went and we thought that was that then kept finding poo so we waited until it was dusk one night and found the hedgehog still in there. I took it back to the veggie plot and stepped back then another hedgehog came grunting along to it sniffed it and prodded it. It unrolled and ran off with the other one to lots of grunts. It really made my day. Anyway on that note I shall sign off on a wet Saturday afternoon. Lindak.

I haven't had to use slug pellets on the garden this Summer. We also have frogs and toads. You have to be careful walking around in the twilight as they emerge from the stone walls then. I've even seen the local carrion crows flying off with snails this year.

Any spare frogs, toads or hedgehogs you can send some up this way. Iwas born in Derbyshire not far from all those places infact i still have a sister who lives nr chesterfield & a sister who lives in mansfield woodhouse, & funny enough my heldest son married a girl from stavley, & they still live there, so all the places you mentioned i know very well.

It's great living here in Belper with the river down the road. There is so much wildlife to see and so much countryside to walk in. We get lots of geese and ducks flying over also herons. We've had a peregrine falcon occasionally around here and Belper Mill. One of the youngsters from two years ago of the breeding pair at Derby Cathedral. We watched the parents this year on the webcam and actually saw the female laying an egg. It was interesting to see them feeding their young and watching them grow and learn how to fly. We saw the parents bringing in their kill and the pair had raised four youngsters this year.

Please pack one up and send him to me, Linda! That would solve my snail problem! I'm glad you had a good week, you were lucky! I agree about the garden being like is normally is in September - flowers are just not lasting, are they. I am very behind due to the weather, and may have to do some 'in my anorak' gardening!!
