Scarifying the lawn.

I don’t know about you ,but scarifying the lawns is one of my most hated jobs.
I begin with the weed and feed game to kill the moss just when there is no rain so I have to wait for rain or as I did this year …….I am out in the garden watering the grass.
I then have to wait until the moss goes black before I get out my very old electric scarifier.
I place two large brown bins one at each side of the lawn as one crossing fills the box with moss. This means I have to empty it each time. I have to go across the grass twice!!!!!
I fill two brown bins with moss in the front garden and another in the back.
I have included a photo of my front lawn after the event!!!
I do all this in one very long day then I sit down with a large glass of wine.
My next job will be grass seed where necessary.
This is my secret to a good lawn…….a large glass of wine.

it does look as if you have murdered it doesn't it? we have had a similar problem and hubby quite enjoys doing it. however two years ago he deep spiked it and brushed in sharp sand. the amount of moss has been greatly reduced due to better drainage.

Lol! Thats where I’m going wrong. What a fantastic method for a great lawn! Exhausting isn’t it Linda. And some people rake it by hand too! Last year my scarifier gave up the ghost so we bought a new one. What a difference! Its SO much better. Perhaps you should treat yourself. You may find one crossing is enough with new sharper tines.

Oh well done - its a beast of a job and so depresssing when you see ll the bare patches afterwards. Never mind, job done for this year!

As I share with two very playful dogs I don't worry about it Linda, since having Harriet I haven't used any feed, mosskiller or weed treatment at all, I daren't use any last year because of that hot dry spell, I go around with my handy tool on my hands and knees removing any dandelions, however when I do get around to doing it again I know it is going to be one very boring and tough job and will look a right mess before it gets better.. You deseved that glass of wine...

The problem is, the lawn is on a slope. It is north facing and needs this treatment again in the autumn. If I don't do it I can't push the lawnmower across the grass.
I must say, it involves a lot of wine.

There is nothing better than a beautiful lawn to set off the plants, sadly I don't have a beautiful lawn - more weeds than grass, but might give it a go this year in places to start with as your lawn encourages me to try. Earlier in the year one spot at the top was all 'fluffy' where the birds had attacked it to get at the moss to build their nests - so that's another excuse not to do it!

I was cheering the rooks on when they were getting moss from the lawn earlier- come on rooks, take as much as you like, there's plenty for everyone...

They are wonderful, Drc. I couldn't look after our lawns without it. They move really fast so there is no pushing needed. The biggest job is emptying it.

I'm sure your hard work will pay off and your lawn will be nice and green for the summer.
I'm glad I got rid of the lawn that was here ! :)
