Plants and trees of Mauritius

Mauritius is a gardener’s paradise set in the Indian Ocean.
Every tree seems to have beautiful blossoms and delicious fruits and the flowers try to outdo each other in colour and form. My camera was constantly at the ready and my Mauritian friend and guide made sure I photographed and tasted everything on offer. The islanders are not into gardens as we are, but most have fruit trees for shade and of course the fruit. Why build a garden when you are surrounded by such beauty at every turn.
Two highlights of my trip were a visit to their botanic gardens and a walk round a garden centre!!!! The hotels on the island have lovely estates, but that is not the true Mauritius. Enjoy…..I did.

What a beautiful place to visit...and such abundance of flowers and fruit...the knarled roots on that tree beside the road were most unusual.

Nice that you have such good memories and the photos to refresh your memory when the holiday begins to fade. Thanks for sharing your photos.

It is a wonderful place Sticki....I love it. Our friend Ray is from Mauritius (pic 5) he is a great guide. We constantly stop and run into the bushes to taste a fruit from the trees. I said if you dropped your false teeth they would grow ten fold.

thats very funny!

bit like george's marvellous medicine on everything then!

how brilliant to have a guide from there too.

do you get to taste a lot of local food too? [ie cooked as well as the fresh fruit?]

Yes...Ray and his wife Jenny are our best friends. Ray is a great cook...Mauritian food is half French half Indian. He has a large family and we are invited out to dinner often in Mauritius. They are very friendly people. :0)

He makes a mild curry with lots of extras so that each person can have it as hot or spiced as they want. They have lots of different chillies. We are going to visit Rodrigues Island where they grow very small hot chillies. My husband Barry loves them so this is a special trip for him. Photos to follow. :0)

excellent! can you get us a recipe too please? or are the ingredients not available here? I cant imagine it would be anything like as good as eating it freshly made there!

Ray doesn't use recipes...his mother taught him to cook. She used to get up at six in the morning and start cooking. My cousin's son is a chef and he wants Ray's special chilli pickle. He says," Oh you just add this and a bit of that etc," he doesn't think in teaspoons or cups or ounces.

An indian man who once worked with OH came to our house and made a curry for us ~ it was fascinating. the most memorable part was watching him cook the onions, he said that was the basis of all good sauces and to cook them for as long as possible ~ to get that golden brown caramalised look and taste ~ cook for around 30 to 40 minutes!

i like cooking but i tend to follow recipes, i call what Ray does ~ real cooking!

It is Sticki.....real good! You are right about the onions, they taste much sweeter.

the trouble is im always in a hurry, it seems, so i dont cook those onions long enough ~ im sure lots of dishes would benefit longer cooking!
