Grandaughters Art

I don’t normally do a blog of this nature so hope you don’t mind, would love your opinions as I know many of you do artwork..
My grandaughter Lizzie is 17yrs old, I know we are biased but she is a clever girl, has already been offered and accepted an unconditional place at Birmingham Uni where she will be studying English and Creative Writing, that’s without her A-Level results, the exams don’t even take place until next month, even knowing her place is secure she is studying hard and determined to do well….
Lizzie is a budding artist so I thought I would show some of her work..

Some are pencil sketches..

Moggie her own cat painted in acrylics on canvas.

Our Morgan, painted in acrylics on wood and below is Toffee another on canvas..

Below two Mother’s Day gifts, the little characters are based on photo’s of herself and brother George taken when they were about 3/4yrs old, they are now fridge magnets..

Xmas Cards.

One of her own characters, she has drawn and painted hundreds, for years she has been an avid fan of Final Fantasy games and artwork which shows in her style of drawing and the stories she also writes…

Last is a painting Lizzie is very proud of, she did it at school when she was 15yrs old, she received a prize for that one..

Its huge, done in oils on hardwood and has pride of place in her bedroom…

Lizzie has done a few of these for friends and family members as commissions to earn some money for her uni fund, trouble is working out how much is a fair price, anyone who paints knows it can soon add up but Lizzie doesn’t want to take advantage, its a difficult one isn’t it, I have one on order but have told her I don’t mind waiting, mustn’t interfere with her revision……

My goodness Linclass, hasn't she got talent? I particularly like her study of animals. She seems to have a knack of picking out the subtle differences in their coats. A talent to watch for in the future I would have said. You must be very proud of her, I know I would be.

Gosh...what a lot of work! I absolutely love the painting of Morgan! Your granddaughter has the same gifting group as me...art, creative writing and English (and music for me). I hope she finds her 'niche'. The world is not easy for creatives and artists, but I wouldn't want to be any different for all of that. I have never been bored or worked just for money because whatever I do, I bring my creative side into it and then it becomes fulfilling.

She's very, very talented! Love the pencil drawing of the cat!

You have very talented granddaughter Lincslass.

We are really impressed. Tell her not to hide her talent under a bushell. How about a website and she could fund her way through Uni. Her talent might even be picked up and her career blossom with no need for Uni?? We wish her well, always follow your dream.

Very talented girl......think creative writing and illustrations. ....a lucrative hobby or a career,

the other thought is using her considerable talents and advertise copying drawings or paintings from photographs, these days with instant photos a drawing puts character ....person or animal... into an image that photos can't.....she just needs a website and she could turn her hobby into cash,
thanks for sharing x

Wow! You have a very talented granddaughter. They are all truly lovely. I used to play final fantasy and I'm a bit of a geek myself so I particularly like those pics. Thanks for posting them. Good luck with the exams Lizzie :)

For our exhibition at the art group I belong to if you spend money having it framed then you double the framing price, I buy ready made frames and price them at what I would expect to pay.....not what its worth, its a difficult one....
selling anything you make by hand is difficult to charge for your hours of work.
I once did quilted christmas stockings for a charity craft fair, all hand quilted ....but I sold them for the sort of prices you saw in the shops...
still we did very well and nothing was left except happy customers and lots of money for the charity.

Your granddaughter's talent is truly amazing Lincs - you must be so proud of her. Not only is she a brilliant artist (at 17!) but she can obviously turn her hand to several different styles . . . really impressive.

When she goes to Uni she'll have a wider audience, and probably people there who can give her good advice for the way forward. Thanks for showing us - it's lovely to see her work, so I hope you'll tell us how she gets on in the future. My warmest wishes for her success :))

Thankyou all, we are very proud of her, it came as a bit of a shock to her tutors because Elizabeth hadn't put art down for Uni but she's leaning towards journalism for her future, hence her choices, she'll never give up her art and is hoping she'll perhaps find an opening when she is actually there as an added extra....

Truly remarkable. I love her painting of Morgan and admire her ability to capture the moods and personalities of the different animals.

I wish her every success for the future and hope she is able to continue studying what she really loves to do.

hello lincslass

your grand daughter has great potential and everything is in the right place . what really shines the most in her art is her cartoon surreal art it really is quite special . remember always date the art even on the back with the year on the front . you can then see wear you've been and wear your going . never think that will do because it never will . always be your own best critic and look for what you don't like as aposed to what you do like about a picture . in the start the basic shading is in blocks and the best way to see that is to squint your eyes . this takes everything out of focus but the basic shading . never see the end of a drawing and always take a break if you don't feel like it anymore or you cant get in the zone . its better having a break than messing a picture up . stand right back and look from a distance . look in a mirror as you see whats wrong if it looks wrong in reverse . the art is all in perspective so a great
foundation for a great potential artist . of course the computers a great resourse . also look at other artists especialy art you aspire too . what I mean by this is if you want to get better at chess you play someone better than you not worse . I never think I cant do better . its very good and I hope this is a realistic review if you like unbiastly . try different art including pottery , cake decoration and even maybe flower arranging . it is all about keeping your eyes open . photography with a reasonable camera is also good . don't waste a talent by not actually knowing what your niche is . im not a cartoonist but I can manage one . having an eye and relaying that image you want through your fingers is what you want . get a big drawing board or two . there cheap now that computers are doing a lot of graphics . get larger paper than you imagine your picture to be . you can cut it down but you cant add bits of paper . I hope this makes sense and remember I wouldn't scratch wear you itch if asked my opinion .

What a wonderful talent I really do admire her work best wishes for her future whatever she decides to do that talent will always be with her .

Thanks Leigh, I always show Lizzie your work and I know she will appreciate your opinion and of course the advice..
Its funny that you mention photography, a couple of weeks back on a very dark cold night , Lizzie asked me to go downtown with her and take my camera to the Mid Lent Fair, I thought she wanted photo's of the fair, you know the sort of thing, blurred images through movement, lighting, exposure and whatnot, all the magical things that one gets with a good camera and lots of different settings, nope not my Lizzie, we took shots of her stood with her back towards the waltzer, portraying the look of a very moody teenager, arms and legs crossed, huffy look on her face, a person who is fedup and bored with the surroundings and definitely showing it, the object of the exercise was to depict body language and facial expressions and was her homework for the latest art project.....
Mind you we did get a very tasty hamburger to warm us up, lol....

I am a little bit concerned about the journalism idea Lincs.
Best to research this. They are very highly paid but have to put up with a lot of bullying and nastiness. Could be
hurtful to an obviously sensitive young lady. Graphics
could be better, as working with nicer people, and courses available at local universities, she would not have to go away from home.
