Jobs still going on... New Pond Filter..

I now find it very awkward cleaning the pond pump and filters with the kit we have been using, the reason being I now find it very difficult clambering about and balancing on the edge of the pond.

As you can see there is not a lot of room, the filterbox with the UV light is over near the fence hidden away under the Ceanotus and the outlet pipe is under the log.

Filterbox….. Still in position but I’m gradually draining the silted water onto the bed it will be good for the plants, when its dried a bit it will be so much easier to lift out and then I can clean it and put it away with the pump and all the hoses..For those of you without a pond that box contains two layers of sponge and loads of little plantpot shaped, holey type of things that all had to be washed and then replaced correctly, the method used to wash them was an old dustbin and a hosepipe, very dirty job..

The pump also contains a piece of sponge that had to be removed and cleaned, the casing I used to scrub with a hard brush as the vents do get clogged up as well…
Below is the lid and the hosing for the old system, nothing wrong with them so they will all be cleaned and packed away….

When doing a clean I had to clamber over and disconnect the outlet pipe, remove the lid and lift that box over the Hydranga and rest of my plants without tipping the silted water over myself or worse still back into the pond, obviously that would have defeated the object of having the filter inline in the first place, also not end up in said pond. YES!! I have done that in the past, LOL…the fish were not impressed…
It was also a case of pulling the pump and lifting out of the pond as well without dislodging the hose that carried the water upwards to the filterbox, also not damage the cable, no mean feat as both are buried under the edging stones which of course had to be lifted and then replaced afterwards…
As you can imagine that job took me ages and if I was unlucky and the weather took a turn for the worst halfway through it was a case of carrying on regardless…
My hubby dislikes gardening and last Easter Weekend I just happened to mention how desperate the pondpump and filters needed to be cleaned and that he would need to help me as I cannot climb and kneel these days, two hours later after a look online and then a quick trip out to Waterside and we have this…

A complete all in one kit still with UV Light, its so much easier, it sits on the bottom of the pond and all we have to do is lift up out of the water) turning off at the mains first obviously) unclip the vented flap on the front, inside are three layers of sponge and small mesh bags containing peagravel, rinse them thoroughly and replace, take the fountain rose off top of pump rinse and replace and then pop kit back into the pond and turn back on…Job done and its a goodun…

Fountain Sprinkling…

Bellhead..

There is a side valve which can have another hose connected for the waterfall as well but we already have another smaller pump set up that works the waterfall, as that is only turned on occasionally in the summertime and only when I’m at home we are leaving that alone at present as it would mean dismantling the side of the waterfall…..
At the moment we are lifting daily as the water was the colour of pea soup but once cleared it will only be done once a week and it literally takes only 5mins, now thats a piece of cake compared to what I used to have to do….

Piece of mind for you lincslass, I have 2 decking areas that need jetwashed and treated every year and its so stressfull, i dread doing it, only alternative is plastic decking!! Love your pond by the way, I bet you get loads of pleasure from it, wildlife etc.

Sandra I cannot do anything without Brynner checking it over, had to ban him from the g'houses though as he is too big and his tail sends things flying....
Thanks Ydd, we haven't any decking here but my neighbour has a huge one that takes them ages to clean, we do have huges pavers on the driveway at the front, hubby has a pressure washer to help clean them, as with lots of his things its very clean and tidily still packed away in his shed, lol, we get a lot of pleasure from our ponds, its very grand sitting and listening to the water and watching fish is very therapeutic, the only visitors I really don't like are the huge Hornets that come in sometimes around Aug/Sept time, now those have me flying back indoors,lol..

Pam I haven't seen a Heron yet this year, they certainly stop the cats so hoping the answer is yes, they certainly look better than the huge safety one I used to have, no tinytot visitors here now so no need for that one....

Hywel its a doddle, its hilarious as him indoors has cleaned it twice now its easier, I do know that is only a novelty though so I let him play, after all he did buy it, lol.. It says in the instructions with a pond our size it could take up to 6wks but once clear it will stay clear and we can already see a big difference.

M'dad I could kick myself, I actually had a pack of two in my hands the day we bought the new setup, for some unknown reason I put it down and then forgot to go back for it, didn't realise until I was back home, I always pop one in our other pond during the summer, its only for the wildlife so not setup with a pump, I've never placed one in the fishpond because of using the filters with the UV light but in my experience they work quite well.....

Hi Lincslass if you still got the waterfall Dandan has come up with a brilliant idea of using watercress as a natural filter in the waterfall, I have just done it and I've put a picture on if you want to check it out. Roy.

That sure is a labour saving replacement Lincs. Well done on OH, odd how asking him to help got it sorted ;)
Your pond is beautiful and it will seem much less of a chore in future.

I know what you had to go through Sue as the big ponds at the other place including the big filter box took Rick ages to do. At least we won't have this problem with our little pond ! Your pond looks lovely and I like the bike. Is it a penny farthing ?

Scottish he's not into gardening at all but loves the fishpond, he appreciates my efforts and the fact that I am happy looking after the garden but gets my goat a bit when he starts telling me I should make it easier on myself, so I am now playing him at his own game, lol, I showed him Bloomers blog today and told him I'd like a circle and that I know where to have one, think he'll shut up now and leave me alone for a while, LOL...

Roe the bike is a trike, we bought it years ago from Mr Scripps Garage in Heartbeat Village, I also have smaller one, present from my youngest a couple of years back..

try to cover the water naturally, a "bridge" of some sort, can you plant the surrounding area to block direct sunlight or plant a vigorous lilly, water cabbage is great at covering the surface of a pond. dont forget oxygenating plants. loads of them.
