My Viburnham has been a right let down this year as regards flowers.

It had grown enormous over 6ft tall and was intent on taking over the whole bed, also was blocking too much light into the greenhouse, it was purchased to commemorate the birth of my grandaughter so getting rid is definitely a nono, so with the weather being ok I made my decision and gave it a haircut.

I know it looks sad and tatty but also know from past experience that it will soon recover.

As you can see it looks a lot lighter when looking down the garden and the Hibiscus in front will stand a better chance to shine, I gained a fair amount of space around the shrub as well so I`ve already planted out more bedding plants, only one dry day and the earth was surprisingly dry in that area, unlike other parts of the garden which were like a mudbath and best left alone.
Our friend the sun decided to arrive in time to set but it was good to see so had to nip indoors for the camera..

Evening Primrose, the perfume was divine.

As you can see I didn`t lose all my Delphiniums and the Poppies are standing proud as well..

As I already said the sun arrived late and only made the top of the hedgerow but hope its back tomorrow as her Majesty is coming to town…

Hardly any viburnum flowers. Me too and i discovered the reason thanks to GOY. Sparrows like to eat the young buds. That's why I had so many sparrows in that bush !!

Just what it needed...I would have done it a bit later on, but it will recover and your greenhouse will reap the benefit for now. :)

I hope Gattina sees this as I told her to chop hers right back last week.

I hope the sun shone again for you Sue. Your garden is looking good. It does things good to have a good haircut every so often
(I only know the word 'good' lol)
I love those Delphiniums. I never get much success with them. And I've never seen such poppies as those double ones. They're fantastic ...
I hope the summer returns soon. It felt like the end of Sep last night.
Can I see someone's tail in the 2nd pic ?

You`ll get better at it Leigh, when the children are small they need your attention more than the plants which is only right, even finding the time to keep a garden tidy can be difficult, mine took years to get like this.
Hywel, I probably wouldn`t have noticed how many good`s there were if you hadn`t said that, lol.
When I originally bought the Delphiniums, I had two shades of blue and one a white, I now have a lot and have given plants away over the years but they are all the same shade of blue as you can see, I`d love the white again and yes Harry was in the garden with me.
We have now had two good days in a row (shh) the forecast predicts a terrible weekend though..

Hywel I forgot to say, the poppies started out as doubles approx 4yrs ago, then they went to singles but still gorgeous and now as you can see they have reverted back to the lovely doubles, I just let them selfseed, so will be interesting if I do get some singles further down the garden..

maybe after the haircut it will flower next time for you sue, Delphiniums look great, mine have all been eaten this year so not a flower to be had :o((

That is what I call drastic pruning, very brave, wish I had the guts to go that far.....your Delphiniums are a picture and your poppies,

Thanks San, I put some slug pellets around the stone wall as soon as the leaves poked through in the springtime..
Dotty it was a case of having to do it as it was nearly as round as it was tall, this is the second time I`ve done it in its 15yrs in the ground...

You probably will get some single ones Sue. I should think it a genetic thing ... sometimes a characeristic skips a few ganerations.

15 Jun, 2012

I had to go back to look at the tail hywel lol well spotted-if it is lol. I know sue im not worrying much about the back as kids (and daddy) are just guna turn it into a footy pitch anyway, so the front-and where people see-will be my pride and joy :o)

Very good thinking Leigh, best place for the chidren is safely in their own garden...
