Lovely pic,Lincslass..I love these little birds.my feeders are all ready and the blue tits and great tits are always there..no goldfinches yet,but some nested in a neighbours tree last year, but they are looked after very well by her..I hope they make their way to mine sometime..:o)

Nice photo. From what I can see feeding the birds is a simple job in your garden Lincslass. Have all squirrels move to my area? I am a bird lover and feeding the birds is my passion. It is a real fight with the squirrels in my garden. I either have to buy expensive squirrel proof feeders, or cover my existing feeders with many layers of wire mesh.

No, you've not got all the squirrels, Costakis - I have a squirrel proof nutfeeder, got fed up with them taking the lot before I did - and now I've got one coming onto the balcony (again), but so far he's just burying conkers in my pots out there, making an unbelievable mess at the same time with soil all over. Hopefully, he won't realise I've started putting seeds on the bird table lashed to the balcony railings...

I feed the birds all year round but they do this every year, at the same weekend when the clocks go back.

Love the joke stickitoffee :-))) Thanks for reminding us of our Birdsay Lincslass, have just noticed that birdseed fat balls need replenishing, so will sort that out tomorrow.

The problem in my garden is created by Dog in a manger pigeons and doves because when they have gobbled up all the bread put out by a well-meaning neighbour, they come over here and hog the feeder unit. I am just amazed that it doen't topple over with the sheer weight of these fat beasts. Still they are birds and we might miss them if we never saw one!:-()

Most of the pigeons have given up on my feeders and I really don't mind them having some of the food....but not ALL of it! A gang of starlings seem to have taken over from them and are eating most of the suet pellets. Ah well, they're all birds as felinfan says. Thanks for reminding us LL, it's good to see the goldfinches back isn't it.

i got a news letter sue but like most of us i feed them all year but increase it over winter , lovely pic ;o))

27 Oct, 2010

My husband Barry has just bought two 12.75 kg bags of bird seed from B&Q....buy one get one free. We could feed every bird in Glasgow on Saturday.

27 Oct, 2010

i feed the birds every day.... : O ))

27 Oct, 2010

I don`t have a problem with squirrels, sad in some ways because they are lovely to watch but I do get to keep my bulbs in my raised bed at the bottom of the garden now.
Loads of starlings and doves always around the clematis arch but pleased to say the larger birds leave the feeders in the apple trees alone so I think I have got all options covered, I also feed all year round, my biggest pain is trying to stop Brynner raiding the tables and drinking the water,LOL...

I got a shock last Saturday, I saw a Heron trying to land on my Willow tree, now thats one bird I DO NOT WANT anywhere near my garden, wish I had my camera handy at the time though.......

27 Oct, 2010

i have a squirrel proof bird feeder ~ but they got in it ~ i have a photo of a squirrel sitting inside it!
i had to tie my other 'squirrel proof' feeder lid down with wire but the little horrors pulled the wire and the lid off!!

28 Oct, 2010

Well they may be starving hungry Sticki ..maybe some consolation?

28 Oct, 2010

you could be right ~ i love watching them, im so impressed by their tenacious[?]ness, persistence and ingenuity ~ those are big words ~ but not so sure of the spelling

28 Oct, 2010

Dont worry about spelling..dd y n tht w cn d wtht mst vwls nd stll rd thngs. Smthng t d wth r ablty t prcss logcly? Cnt rmmbr whr I rd t!

28 Oct, 2010

Tenacity, Stickitoffee...

28 Oct, 2010

but you spelled tenacious correctly

28 Oct, 2010

Well done Tetrarch, I learnt that on here but can`t remember whose blog it was on.....

28 Oct, 2010

Oh dear ! Too late :o( lol
Never mind. I could put something for them on other days.

1 Nov, 2010

I`m sure they will appreciate that Hywel,lol.....

I moved my bird table as I redone my garden - a little closer to the house but not too close. just wonder if it will make a difference either way more or less birds

3 Nov, 2010

i was surprised how many birds came to my bird table when i moved it nearer to the house ~ i dont think it made any difference ~ [except that i could see them better] they also found it quite quickly.
it is now appx 4-5ft from my window and we have had robin, nuthatch, jay, blue tit and great tit on it

3 Nov, 2010

Good gald to hear that :) Hoping to get some good varieties like that too

3 Nov, 2010

hope you do ~ i havent got any really good photos but heres hoping you will! you could put them on I spy a bird web site?

3 Nov, 2010

I haven't actually got any bird pictures even though I love them - I need a really good camera

3 Nov, 2010

i dont have a really really good camera ~ its not an SLR but maybe the next best thing ~ i really like it ~ small enough to carry round but still takes nice pictures ~ but i havent found a way of taking things that move fast.

4 Nov, 2010

I film it for video and have a programme called Magix that you can pause any part of the film and get a photot still of it - this is how I have pictured Lightning a couple of times.

5 Nov, 2010

I spoke to my twitcher brother in law about what camera for photographing birds - turns out he carries around a suitcase full of specialised kit, and told me not to bother about snapping birds with an ordinary camera, so unless they sit still nearby, you've no chance without decent equipment.

5 Nov, 2010

i was coming to that conclusion bamboo ~ thanks! i dont want the suitcase so i will have to be content to look at others! autumn watch had some lovely creatures on last night.

5 Nov, 2010

Bamboo if you want to count how many feathers in a birds tail then he is probably correct, if you only want pics for your enjoyment albeit good ones and yes I do mean in flight as well then my little Olympus Digital is quite a natty one,........

5 Nov, 2010

I'll admit I've never tried a moving bird with mine, its a Sony digital, 12.1 megapixel

5 Nov, 2010

mine is similar i think bamboo ~ canon powershot G10 ~ 14megapixel but im not sure thats what counts ~ i havent mastered light and timing yet. im still practising tho!

5 Nov, 2010

Mine takes brilliant pics - except of people! They're so detailed you can see every line, wrinkle, pore, spot - everyone seems to look ghastly. Mind, that's a bit of a relief really, I thought it was just pics of me that were awful...

5 Nov, 2010

i dont like taking pics of people so that wouldnt matter

5 Nov, 2010

No Luke this is primarily a garden blog which includes birds and wildlife as it affects our garden. Also includes peripherals like cooking (outdoor garden eating) and laughs, garden anecdotes...in fact...gardens are our lives and like all gardeners over the garden wall, we love to lean on our metaphorical spades and chat!

4 Jun, 2011

that is very well put tetrarch! you certainly have a way with words. i didnt know how to explain it ~ well I certainly couldnt have done it as well as you anyway.

4 Jun, 2011

Why thank you dear friend! I often think of our blog as being like that, tho I guess more an "internet wall" lol!

4 Jun, 2011

Hmm, just caught up with this, wondered why it kept popping up again after all this time. Obviously Luke's not happy with this blog - at least, I think he's not, without punctuation its a bit hard to tell...

4 Jun, 2011

i just hope we dont look like les dawson chatting over the garden fence!! even tho thats what we do.

you can chat too luke ~ this is a community garden site ~ so you can enjoy the garden, the birds, the food and the chatty comments!

4 Jun, 2011

Luke, firstly, this is a gardening site and forum.
Secondly, you should not be interfering with Lincslass blog - write your own.

When we write a blog it is OUR OWN and it's not for other people to add to - they may comment on it but not add to it.

4 Jun, 2011

Well, you could argue that what Luke has written is a comment - a long and winding one, but a comment nonetheless.

4 Jun, 2011

You certainly dont look like Les Dawson Sticki...however, I might!!!

4 Jun, 2011

How'd you know Sticki doesn't look like Les Dawson, tetrarch?

4 Jun, 2011

We've met Bamboo! No guesswork there lol!

4 Jun, 2011

Ah, so that's the secret, lol!

4 Jun, 2011

no you dont!!!

but we will have to make sure we dont fold our arms and lean over the fence!!

4 Jun, 2011

Why ever not,Sticki..?..we need something to lean on..chat's can last a while,so we need to be as comfy as possible...:o)

4 Jun, 2011

ok, you can lean on the fence ~ thats fine ~ garden seat would be even better! ~ but folding arms looks like les dawson!!
