What was on my chimney?

I was up early to let out the dogs. I strayed onto the lawn and something made me look up at the roof. I nearly died of shock. There was the most enormous bird, like a stork .It was all grey and with a huge beak and it caught my eye as it unfolded its huge jointed legs and took off in a panic. I thought crane. I put the news on and featured in it was a bird snctuary in Somerset where they were introducing cranes back into the country after 400 years of their being a common sight. Now it is only a short flight from the Somerset wetlands to the marshes of newport wetlands , Could it be one of these cranes? I listen with interest in case someone else has spotted one.

Do you have a fish pond, with nice bg fat juicy fish in it? If yes - it probaby was a heron.
