The fall and rise of nerines

On the 6th September 2012 I posted a question on my nerines …

http://www.growsonyou.com/question/show/98435

The leaves really didn’t look as thick and healthy as they usually did and I was worried they would never flower again. I got some great reassuring replies ~ many thanks.

The greatest reassurance came though when they started to bloom …

I couldn’t believe the joy (and relief) I felt and I was happy for the rest of the day. They are one of my favourites and add a splash of colour in the winter months.

This is how they look now,

although they are starting to show signs that they are on the way out. They don’t look quite as good as they usually do, but I think they have still put on a really good show and I have been enjoying them every day. Just goes to show Mother Nature has a way of sorting itself out no matter what the weather and without any intervention from us!

They are beautiful plants aren't they? ... My clump have been blooming for a while now ... a touch of frost overnight have made them droop now ... :o(((

I first came across them on an october trip to Guernsey, it was the Guernsey lily festival and I was very taken with them, they had one lovely display in a glass house, as well as clumps In the gardens, so I adopted the idea, growing them in clay pots in the gh......my cold wet clay probably wouldn't have suited them anyway....they have been a delight.
Yours look lovely, it was probably the awful weather that upset them a bit.

They are lovely Lijemc, mine have been flowering for weeks, struggling a bit with the frost this past few days but they have certainly earned their place in my garden......

they are beautiful and especially welcome at this Time of year. But I was surprised yours have leaves and flowers at the same time - mine get leaves in spring and flowers in late autumn after the leaves have disappeared. Am I alone in this?

I copied up some instructions about Nerines from Wikipedia. Certain times of the year for watering or kept dry etc. Maybe they only apply to Nerines in the greenhouse ? The advice to keep the bulb above the compost seems the right thing to do. We go on learning.

Thank-you everyone. Steragram, you're right. Mine are usually the same, thick luscious leaves in spring and then flower in autumn. In past years when the flowers come out there are no leaves left, but I think Pamg was right in saying the awful weather this year has meant that they aren't performing as they normally would! Maybe it means there are more flowers to come, who knows! I can only hope.

At -3.5c this morning I guess that they wouldn't last long here......

Mine live outside in a pot in a very sheltered spot between a south wall and west wall. Watering and dry period just depend on the weather, but they have flowered for years. Keep thinking its really time to repot them in fresh compost after all this time...
