… a rose would bloom …

… on the 1st December!

I walked up the garden steps today to replenish the bird table and was met by this 1 solitary rose in full bloom. We’ve had a couple of thick frosts this week, but despite this it is still in full bloom (the rose bush hasn’t had any roses on it for a good few weeks now prior to this one).

I planted this rose bush in memory of my dad who died in 2008, so I like to think he is sending me a sign! What do you think?

I think he is and will be so pleased to see his memory rose.

And for my own dad a beauiful rhodendrum which is now full of buds .

Some of my garden plants I call 'Memory plants' Every year they grow again and I remember the person who gave them to me.

Thank-you Scotkat and Diane. I agree, I find it's a great way to remember the person and find myself talking to that person when I am gardening nearby. I always find that these 'memory plants' seem to do well whatever, so I think they must be receiving extra care from above.

I should have said I live in SE London, that's why I wouldn't expect a rose to flower at this time of year. I know where I live, and I assume other people know as well! lol. I also forget sometimes that the site is used worldwide.

That is so lovely ,Lijemc , and so unusual .
I think that it is probably a little message .
I tried for years to get some of my dad's everlasting pea to take in my garden , it never would . The year after he died up came a beautiful pea , I never planted it ; we always say that he sent it for me .

How lovely, I also have plants, trees and shrubs that have special meanings to them and yes I chatter to them as well, I think they bring comfort along with the memories, its a lovely rose......

A lovely rose - not a common colour. My special memory plant is a magnolia stellata in memory of our younger son.

My garden is full of memories too, the contorted hazel was the last plant my husband and I planted together, my Father's potted rhodedendron and azaleas bring colour to my garden every year as they did in his garden for so many years, along wth the fuchsia, japanese anemone, astilbe, rhubarb, and lavenders grown from cuttings/divisions taken from my Mother's garden shortly after she died, and the lily, double marsh marigold and water iris transplanted from the pond my husband dug for me to the current pond created by my son. I have a peace rose that reminds me of the many happy hours spent teaching in Sunday school (the children planted one in the church garden during the Remembrance Sunday service one year). I would dearly love to grow 'The Brownie' rose in my garden too, to remind me of my many years as Brown Owl, one day I shall find one :-)
Some day I shall have to 'downsize' and much of the garden will have to come too.

Thank-you everyone. Our gardens certainly offer a lot of comfort and there is no better therapy than being out pottering in the garden ~ my favourite pastime!
