Did they wilt before dying or did you notice the leaves going brown first - vibernum does suddenly die but the leaves turn brown until eventually they all go and then it dies. It can spread to other bushes and trees in the vicinity.

Drought, most likely - as its next to your drive, presumably its fairly exposed to wind, which would assist greatly in drying out the soil. The only other thing is, do you ever put weedkiller down on the driveway? Run off from that into the bed could cause this problem.

I have sympathy with Doctorbob's suggestion of a gas leak. It sounds as if they could be being poisoned. I don't suppose the you have a fuel or oil spillage on the drive to contaminate the soil?
