How to give Jake a pill

Jake has always been good at taking pills…despite not having the need for them that often. Now that he DOES need to take them he is playing up. The antibiotics are meant to be palatable but not from Jake`s point of view. Those of you with pets, particularly cats or dogs may know the scenario.

1) you offer the pill…no way says dog and promptly spits it out.

2) being wily and far more intelligent than your dog you wrap it up in a tasty piece of cheese and again offer it to dog…who eats cheese and spits out pill.

dog has v. stubborn look on his/her face.

3) again you show your superiority by using not only cheese but a tasty slice of chicken (Tesco Finest) meant for your own meal. Wrap up pill and pop it in dog`s mouth…he eats chicken and spits out pill.

You sigh…..chop up pill into four pieces and think hard

4) brainwave….bread will probaby help. Wrap up pill in piece of bread and again pop into dog`s mouth followed by pice of cheese and some more chicken…it works…..!

you do this again and again and again until all of pill is swallowed.
wash hands of saliva and bits of food and pill.
watch dog disappear into the living room at top speed.

The whole thing took nearly 20 minutes. Jake has eaten one slice of granary bread, about 4 ounces of cheese and two slices of chicken meant for my tea. Do I begrudge him? Not a bit, the only thing is I have to do it all again in the morning and by then he will have thought up a new way to get some tasty titbits!

Bye for now.

Hi Sandra

I had same trouble with sadly missed Bruce 2 , the way I got round it was to have three small treats with tablet hidden in second or third one, then throw them up for him one by one , he would catch em in mid flight and swallow quickly knowing there was another one about to go up in the air . It worked even better if there was another dog near hand and he thought he might lose out . . . .fortunately dogs learn very quickly so you might need a few different methods to out wit them.

Now then - I thought all labradors had hollow legs and caught and swallowed everything WHOLE ! I tell you - all my labs always have - unless they got a whiff of what I was up to ...then it was a different matter ......LOL

Hello Sandra...
In recent days Conker has been taking 8 tablets every day...
... so I guess it is a good thing that I'm able to put each pill in a blob of natural bio yogurt, on the end of my finger, and post it down the back of his throat....

...good luck with lovely Jake..xxx

I used to try all those tactic to give Paddy a pill Labdancer but nothing worked so now I'm afraid I just pop in in his mouth and hold it shut for a couple of seconds and he swallows it! Didn't think it would be so easy but it is. And to think, for years we struggled with hiding them in food etc!

Oh ! I reemember the cunning ways I had of giving Fluffy ( a previous cat) a pill. In the end the vet had to give her injections instead. lol
Good luck for tomorrow :o)

I am still giggling! This is such a good picture of Henry and his worming pills! He found them and spat them out whatever we did....but ....we have it sussed now.

The solution? Garlic pate! He loves it - and gollops it without noticing the pill inside! LOL.

Hi Puss has been having Antibotics in Capsule form but because his Jaw is broken & Stiched i couldnt hold his mouth open 2 pop them in :( so i opened the Capsule & tipped the Powder into the top of a Sringe & mixed with warm water which disolved all the powder after giveing it a good shake! This has worked great as all i have to do is Squirt it into the side of his mouth & he swallows it !! Job done :)

My mum was a vet nurse and said cats were the worse ones to give pills to so she used to put the pill in a knob of butter and it would just slide down the throat before they had a chance to realise the pill was there. I am a bit harsher there is no messing I just open the mouth shove the pill to the back of the throat. close their mouth and hold muzzle up and stroke their throat. Works everytime!
Good luck trying all the different suggestions and whilst you are at least he is eating well :~))
